But no 3D touch....
Well, it might never find it's way to a future iPad...
With all this power, I hope that we are finally gonna see the developers offer their apps as AU Plugins.
I really want Animoog and some of my other "friends".
And when you're at it: Offer them for Mac OS as well, so the projects can be ported from iOS GarageBand to LogicPro (or Cubasis/Cubase) including the sound patches.

iSem already exists as a plugin for MaxOS and Windows...

3D touch was the feature i hoped they would include.
But for sure these iPads are powerful for such mobile devices.
For sure the best multi-touch experience.
Thinking about to buy one...not sure which size yet.
It´s still a bit away from replacing my macbook pro but it comes closer every year.
Macbooks are just so overpriced sadly and i want a great multi-touch experience (which isn´t available on windows 10).

Supposedly it's really hard to implement on touch a big screen rather than "holding features back".

Me too. I'm six years into my 2011 17" MBP now, on its 4th logic board, and it won't last much longer. I have an iMac so with IOS 11 coming I think I will be replacing the MBP with a 12.9" iPad. I can no longer afford to spec up a new MBP to £3.5k.

I have the 12.9 iPad Pro. Works well with the Pencil for drawing... but for serious production it is far behind a MBP in performance.

I have the 12.9 iPad Pro. Works well with the Pencil for drawing... but for serious production it is far behind a MBP in performance.

I hear you but I am not a serious producer, just a dabbler and experimentalist who likes toys.

I have an iMac for the 'serious production' stuff. I have an iPad Mini which is too small and I find frustrating to use for all the great toys on IOS.

I will undoubtedly miss having a MBP, I have had one since the start, and G4 Powerbooks before that, but they have become so expensive now that you can't install your own RAM and drive(s - I have 2 in my 17", one replacing the DVD).

Also (IMO of course) the keyboard and trackpads on the new MBPs sucks...they both feel terrible and I miss characters while typing. My wife got one for business and after using it I won't be getting a new one unless/until they change these things. I also miss the actual escape and other keys. The thing is overall too thin as well, it's awkward to raise the lid and even to pick up...I'm left asking "Why, exactly, does a power machine need to cater to a business traveller with really weak arms that just needs Microsoft Office?" I know a lot of folks like the new ergonomics so ymmv.

Anyway, on the iPads I'm looking to get another one for the family. We have a 4th gen one and I'm wondering if the standard ipad would be just fine for guitar and keys apps, or if the Pro would have some benefit. I'm guessing the standard would be fine, as I would only be running one or two synths and maybe bias/amplitube on it at any one time.

The iPad model April 2017 is powerful enough, for just some tracks.
I started a little GB project with 8 instruments tracks, 2 of them being Alchemy, plus 3 vocals tracks, the vocals tracks using the common effects (compression, es, reverb, pitch correction, a little distortion)
No problem so far.

But the one i would want would cost me at least €3299..... i could get a powerful 512GB iPad for 1/3 of this.
Maybe it's the plan from Apple...let the macOS die to control everything over the app store.
But still waiting for Logic iOS and a 15" iPad

I guess they were considering it, but the level of complaints from pro users made then rethink it. Now you see the iMac Pro announced and a new Mac Pro on the way. Obviously Apple decided that pro content creators were important to their image and desirability... which affects their bottom line.

iOS 11 gets an actual file system, which will finally make it a viable laptop substitute... for low level users. I just purchased the new 512GB 12.9 iPad Pro (because of the announced file system in iOS 11) and because Affinity Photo is now available for iOS.

iOS is good for consumers. OSX is better for content creators.

There is still so much in depth capability that a variety of pro users take advantage of in OSX. And of course you have machines with far more memory, graphics processing and much more robust internals in general. There are reasons the iPad is much cheaper than the MBP's

As an owner, do you have the keyboard? Sorry if this sounds stooopid but is there a way of working with keyboard & 12.9 on your lap or is it too unstable?

Has anyone has any issues with screen cracks with the iPad Pros (the new ones or the older ones)? I found more than a few mentions of this online. The new 10.5" is kinda tempting but it ain't cheap.

Had the keyboard... gave it to someone who types a lot and had no laptop. I may buy it again sometime but I did not use it all that much. It's kind of annoying on the lap. You cannot adjust the tilt and it too easily comes apart. Of course if you are attentive, it functions, but I much prefer my MBP for when I am doing writing, web coding etc. It is so easy to pick up, move, change position, slouch down on the couch and so on.

I don't find the iPad Pro interesting for music stuff. My MBP has usb ports, so I can just plug in my Linnstrument and RME Babyface Pro and play. Both power fine from the laptop so it is easily portable... simple and compact to fit in a backpack - no fuss, no muss, no connectivity issues. None of my favorite music software is available for iOS. For these and other reasons, I find trying to do music stuff on the iPad Pro sucks compared to the MBP. It's no contest. I see no reason to try to make something work that is fundamentally not a good fit.

Where I find the iPad Pro (with Pencil) to be well worth it, is for drawing. Paintstorm has the best brushes I've tried (OSX or iOS) and it is such an obvious and natural experience to use. Affinity Photo is also now available for iOS and it works really well on the new iPad Pro. Still a few issues, but they are sorting that out fast and their GUI is great. I assume Affinity Designer will make its way to iOS as well. For graphics and drawing, the experience is immediately pleasing. The Pencil and touch screen just works better for this use and there is no need to connect other devices like with audio. I can go sit in the park with the iPad Pro and Pencil and nothing else and create work of the highest quality (with me being the only real limitation).
