When I read threads like this one (and especially postings like xraydelta's) I don't feel like making music anymore - just because my music could never be as entertaining

it really amazes me how the majority of people replying to this topic have kept things very much in perspective and relatively unbiased in the realm of comparison. the analogy i always liked best for the whole mac/pc debate is this:

a mac is like buying a really nice luxury sedan. it runs smooth, goes pretty fast out of the box, and is loaded with lots of nice features that make your life easier. you can pretty much drive it for years and years, and as long as you bring it in for a tune up and an oil change every so often, it'll be good to you for as long as you want.

on the other hand, a pc is a hotrod, flat out. it may start it's life as a honda civic, but you can mod that sonuva bitch out with a million tweaks and it'll blow anything else the hell away as far as sheer speed and power go... but you have to know what you're doing under the hood, and make sure all that new hardware you install works together. otherwise you're gonna be sitting on a nice shiny piece of metal going nowhere.

take what you want from it, always worked for me. the only real divding line that i see, other than price point, is "professional" level software... Logic and Digital Performer are Mac only. Sonar is only for PC. the rest, on the whole, can go both ways fairly well.

i will leave you with this: the mac i have now i bought used from my teacher at school. it's one of the first vintages of G4, i believe, about 5-7 years old. it was the main Pro Tools computer at his studio before he started teaching, and then his home pro tools computer after that. it was 350 MHz when I bought it. I upgraded the processor to 1.2 GHz shortly thereafter and run Logic Pro 6 on OSX on it with good results. I'm fairly confident that, even after the day i get a G5, this machine will still be a more than adequate softsynth/sampler host for even more years to come.

Most of this thread has been instructive. Some peopele, maybe even a mac user like me may want to use somethin... more powerful and cheaper, even though I like macs. So its always interesting to hear balanced opinions. But that xraydelta guy LOVES TO SHOUT DOESN'T HE?

I'd like to see proof of the bankruptcy thing, as apple have billions in the bank. I'm not saying its not true, but just 'cause he said it doesn't mean it is either. Same about Microsoft inventing the internet, wasn't it a bunch of unix people from universities finding ways to communicate?. Microsoft have just tried to make it proprietry, like they tried to do with Java etc. Again, correct me if I'm wrong (someone who actually knows please, rather than someone who can just type in capitals).

xraydelta1 -- can you speak English or this Klingon? Since when is being popular a requirement for creativity? Are you the king of bling and incredibly shallow or what? Go back to your crack or pot or whatever it is that you think is making you so "creative".

As for PC & Mac. The Mac used to be the better tool of choice, but those days are long over. Personally I'd go with the PC since it currently can run circles around the best Mac in terms of pure performance. Also, the number of manufacturers that support the PC and the amount of resources going into PC software development are a factor 1000 more than the resources that go into Mac development. There is just no way the Mac will be able to keep up with the PC now or in the future.

Be careful before you predict the future! People have been saying Apple will go ou of business for years. Decades probably.

(and even now the dual 2.5s are pretty fast I think, if not competitive price/performance-wise

Is it really a prediction or just and re-iteration of what most already know? I didn't say that Mac will go away (I hope it doesn't), but it will just fall further and further behind unless some miracle of funding/profits happen. As loyal as Mac customer's are they can't hold back the rate at which the PC is progressing.

Donkey tugger, I do have a brother in Winchester -- is this relevant?

Oh, and I do have some relatives in Blackpool and other various parts of England/Scotland.
