That's why I ended up getting Kontakt - it reads EXS very well and without needing to convert so I can use the EXS2 inside Logic and Kontakt can read the same libraries outside it such as in Tracktion and Energy XT. I have a very similar set up to you by the sounds of it.Barbarossa wrote: What was making me concerns, was my well sorted EXS-library. I was not willing to leave it. Well, EXSP, works great and also works with aliases like EXS.
In case i need to edit a EXS-program, i still use the EXS in Logic. In the near future i plan to buy a new sampler capable to read EXS-format.
goodbye to logic!!...then ..what host???

Well ok Logic is old and all etc.
Ok too the rendering process is quite boring specially for long projects,
Appart from that there's no major issues with even exotic freebies vst/vstis, as long as you wrap them into FxMax FxFreeze.
It adds a nice feature, it solves compatibility issues, and this "update" is quite cheap if you consider it can help you delaying the switch for another couple of months, or more.
my 50$ "2 cents"

That's good news.aMUSEd wrote:That's why I ended up getting Kontakt - it reads EXS very well and without needing to convert so I can use the EXS2 inside Logic and Kontakt can read the same libraries outside it such as in Tracktion and Energy XT. But a major backdraw for me is Kontakt's unability, to switch through instruments, isn't it. You need to drag and drop and delete, don't you?.
aMUSEd, another question: i heard lots of complaints about the Kontakt filters, but on the other hand, the same people are praising the Halion filters, being much better. But Halion's filters are - in case of self-oscillation - whistling, not smacking.
Does the Kontakt filters whistle or smack?

Yes - you drag/drop or doubleclick to load an instrument. I agree it's not as simple as a drop down list like in EXS. No complaints about the filters - it can do more than Logic's sampler in terms of messing with the original sample. No idea about Halion but I don't think it natively supports exs - I think you'd have to convert your files to Halion format.

Please give Podium a try. I think that it will please you very very much. It is one of the most truly useable and logical music apps out there.simonhans73 wrote:Hello

It's Tracktion with a 'c'... and some of us who make (surprisingly) music don't care for and don't even WANT video support. What do you expect from a fledgeling $80 app still in version 1.x anyhow?ericj23 wrote:get traktion - and be completely unable to work with video
Maybe. I've also jumped on bandwagons jumping on Tracktion's MIDI implementation, but having recently tried more and more MIDI, it's not exactly crippled. Mind, you DID say "comparatively", so compared to a MIDI sequencer (as opposed to an audio sequencer) you may be right., midi (comparitively speaking),
Dunno where you got THAT from. Tracktion once had one of the ONLY working freeze functions, and it's still perfectly implemented for its particular style of freeze (ie. it renders ALL frozen tracks into one audio file for maximum resource-freeing, which is slower but more thorough). I've never had any troubles whatsoever freezing or unfreezing selectively. Better yet, a one-button render-and-replace function adds another option to the way you "freeze" (though it doesn't use that word).have a useless freeze function (yes folks unfreezing everything is useless if you have a lot frozen cos that cpu meter goes straight to 100%)and lack of multi monitor support
Even as I write this, I know it's useless, because host wars are only based on subjective opinions, which then use "facts" (more like "factoids") to thinly veil brand loyalty. That includes me. From what I've heard (never tested), Logic DOES have the most properly implemented freeze function of the bunch; however, that does not make Tracktion's useless.
And for crying out loud, I'll say it a second time: $80 and on version 1.x. Even Cubase isn't REALLY on version 3, as there have been heaps and heaps of previous versions under different names.

There really can't be a perfect freeze function, but the one in Tracktion works fine for me. Also the render and replace thingy is very useful, it was worth the switch from Acid alone.

If you think about it just one sec, Cubase SX is nothing but Cubase S[i]X, that is, SX3 is Cubase 6.3 in the end.
In the marketing war, when Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.x became Sonar, Steinberg had to react, and Cubase 5 became CubaseSX (but the blondie on the ads was meant to say Cubase was S[e]X[y]...)
Go figure...

simonhans73, good questions you have, I for one never get tired of these discussions because things are always changing and upgrading plus there's so much to learn from other peoples experiences. I'll only offer you this burden of proof though, You can see that ableton Live hasn't been mentioned much, even though it has a zillion users and there in is your answer. Most Live Users like myself haven't chimed in because they are making music right now and enjoying it on a level that none of these other apps can claim
to offer, that's why they don't have time for this .....oh me? i'm just takin a break.
check the current issue of computer music magazine for a rundown of what live can do and make sure you read it slowly cause you're surely not going to believe all of it, but it's the real deal and remember professionalism doesn't come from an application it comes from your songwriting.

can i just say i dont ahve a problem with tracktion at all
ie tried it - it wasn't for me
my problem is with the kind of messianic fervour with which some of the users promote it
it is no the cure for all ills OK !
the man was using a fully featured high end sequencer - i suspect that until tracktion becomes something similair it's really more of a sign of peoples need to wear a badge. Its a tool - choose one suitable for the job - if it breaks use another

I've never seen any messianic behaviour... like users of ANY product, people are enthusiastic because it works, and for $80 it works as well as one of the "major" apps for many many people. There's only one feature that I miss on it.ericj23 wrote:my problem is with the kind of messianic fervour with which some of the users promote it

I think you'll find (especially by reading the Raw Materials forum) that the reverse is actually true-- we're almost TOO quick to jump on its flaws and complain about it sometimes.
At the end of the day, though, it was a revelation for many of us, and we like to try to share that with people who may not have given it a chance otherwise; pepole who might have been thinking that for a mere $80 it just "can't" be a serious app.

the famous freeze function on logic seemed the answer to SX-nuendo offline processing with unlimited undos fully editable that they provide and set steinberg sequencers on a dimensions yet to be attained for other companies.
i don´t like all the pluggs on SX but neither like all the pluggs on Logic but at least Steinberg pulled of VST ,ASIO and VSL among other technicallyties that
logic answered with Audio Units .
most of the people i read here don´t seem to know what they re talking about they seem not to like SX because they can´t put a tune togheter with it, thru the comments and bashing i get the idea that they can´t do it well elsewhere .
obviouly we can´t do it on any sequencer only in SX
we can´t do it faster.
The audio engine of Cubase was taken from the mega monster Nuendo ence the change of name fom VST to SX wich stand for Studio Extended.

No. SX was a total rewrite, programmed from scratch, based on Nuendo 1. That's why they choosed to give it a new name. Besides that they wanted Cubase and Nuendo to be based on the same code base. Very sensible I think. Being a total rewrite however meant also that they weren't able with SX1 to get all functions from 5.1 into SX1 in time and a whole lot of other problems. I think Steinberg did a very good job with SX2 however.
The fact is programs have a lifetime. With a good program you can add new functions for years to come
but in the end there will be a day when it's more sensible to start from scratch. In Cubase 5.1 there was still some code from the Atari days.
