I'm new to the game, and want to start out with a sampler, but I'm strapped for cash now (300), so I was wondering if i could get by with getting a sampler that costs this much, or should I hold off and save up for say a korg electribe esx-1, or the holy grail an akai mpc4000. Any suggestions about good samplers?

Join the Wusikstation group buy! It's 49.95$ to get in. If the group buy hits 201+ then you won't pay a penny more! (currently its at a 30% discount on the group buy, so only 69.95$ !!!)

VSampler 3 is priced well, and has an extensive spec.
Member 12, Studio One Pro 7, VPS Avenger, Kontakt 8, Spitfire, Sonible, Baby Audio, CableGuys. Recent best buy - EZ Drummer 3 with Bandmate

I don't know much about samplers but I do know that when I was in a band 10 years ago the keyboardist bought an Ensoniq ASR10. Back then disk drive space was the only issue but I am sure this would be resolved in this modern age. He still has the ASR10 so must be happy with it. They can't be too expensive these days. Like I said though I wouldn't know and there are probably bigger and better things available so that should be your decision as to whether to wait or not.
If it were up to me though I would buy a vsti sampler (Kontakt/Sampletank/VSampler/HALion etc) and ditch the hardware. Depends on what you want to use it for though.

Yup - DS-404 for the cost of a magazine is pretty great
If you want to play soundfonts, there's sfz, which is super high quality and free. You can also map your own samples into sfz format(using a text file - not in the gui) , so it's kind of a semi-sampler.
Whilst I have no doubt that Wusikstation is a great synth and I am sorely tempted to join the group buy, it's not a sampler. I'm not sure why it was recommended, but maybe you could try the demo and find something I've missed.

That is true, Wusikstation isn't really a sampler. I just want people to join up
Here's another freebie, but in beta still http://www.kvr-vst.com/get/1191.html
