I want to sample various beats and sounds etc... from a cd. What software allows me to record the sample into the computer and edit it? Can I just put the cd in the cd drive and stream it in from the computer or do I need to do it through my audio interface? I would like it to recognize bpm as well...
forgive me if this is silly to some of you...

Most cd-burning software will allow you to convert audio tracks to .wavs. Roxio's Easy CD Creator is one. As for the bpm, I think that would have more to do with your host.
Buy my cd here (Prog rock/synth pop/classical/soundtrack-ish music):

I'd tell you but I'm afraid all the nannys will come in splitting hairs about copyrights and how many seconds of a sample can dance on the head of a pin before it's called stealing
before you know it the computer music magazines fine name will be dragged thru the mud several times
oh the drama..the...ah frig it
get an audio editor that can extract audio from cd (most do)
and read the manual
it helps

here is how i would do it - go to download.com and get CD-EX to extract the whole track from your cd - then MixMeister BPM analyzer can tell you the bpm of any file you give it.. i think i also got that at download.com
while you're there you could check out my songs at download.com/noahcohn

I think cubase has a cd to audio track function which can take audio tracks from cd's and place them as wav's in your arrangement...might be a bit expnsive depending on what your using it for...
