I'm looking for something I can use to host VST/AU effects and route any audio application to that before it goes to my sound card. Must work on Mac (and preferably also Windows if possible.) Must be able to route *any* application so it has to be a standalone and not a DAW plugin.

I'm currently using menuBUS for this. It is slightly buggy, occasional audio glitches are noticeable. And I believe it is no longer in development so one day I expect an OS update to render it non-functional.

I thought Blue Cat Patchwork would do the job but the standalone can only route from a system input to the output.

I've discovered I can do it with a combination of Rogue Amoeba Loopback and Patchwork. But this is an expensive option as each application is $100. I don't mind paying but $200 is a bit much.

I may look at Soundflower but I really want an all in one application and I don't think Patchwork is worth $100 if I still have to fiddle with Soundflower.

Does such an application exist?

Rogue Amoeba Audio Hijack lets you insert AU effects, but unfortunately not VST, between any application or input and a soundcard. Not sure if VST is a dealbreaker for you. Costs less than Loopbackand works great from my experience.

I thought Audio Hijack was for recording (that's how it seemed on their page) but if not then it's definitely worth a try.

Cantabile looks to be Windows only. This was not clear from the site but the manual indicates Windows XP and up. Pity, as it could have been just the thing.

Thanks.

I'm note sure that I understood what you want to achieve but I use jackrouter to route audio between different application. It work on linux, windows and osx.
It doesn't seem to remember my "patchbay" (or maybe I don't use it correctly) and I have to check the connections everytime I restart it, but it works.

Another +1 for Audio Hijack. I use it all the time. It can capture all your system audio, or only a single application, and do whatever — add effects, record, pass to one or more output devices, etc. As said above, it only supports AU.

I use it in conjunction with Loopback for live broadcasting, but in your case you wouldn't need Loopback.

Rogue Amoeba +1
Loopback gives you incredible power and control over how audio is routed around your Mac and between applications. We can't wait to hear about the incredible new uses you find for it!
so can be added any vst host to the chain, for ex. how to create feedback loop in Bitwig

with Loopback audio device, https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/
and with combining multiple audio interfaces by creating Aggregate Devices, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202000

I've done all the routing I've ever need to do, in the box, with SoundFlower aggregate device and PlogueBidule (in which you can load any number of AU/VSTs). I've not yet been able to understand the benefits of AudioHijack & Loopback above my solution..

Had a quick look, only real advantage of is being able to Shout/IceCast..?

Hope you find what you need!
