Out of curiosity I've decided to do a simple 4-track loop using native devices and few 3rd party REs (Abl3, SPEM, Steerpike) put into Combinators. Attached you'll find all 3 projects, MIDI and combinator patches. All DAWs are at their newest version (11, 3 and 4.5 respectively), running via Asio4All at 24bit / 48kHz. In Reason hyperthreading is disabled, as it almost doubles the CPU load in this particular case.

Long story short - the differences are negligible - all oscillate between 11-14%, although Studio One seems to be the most volatile.

Also, no "Reason sound" was spotted in this test

Did you make a null test up to -96 dB though?

Meaning the Reason devices sound slightly different as VST than as standalone? So in which DAW did they sound the best in your opinion?

No. He was joking. There is no difference in how Reason devices sound between any DAW - Reason proper included - assuming you're using the same effects or processing on them in said DAW.

They did - they're called SubTractor, Maelstrom, Thor, Europa, Dr. Octo. They have their own unique sound just like Sylenth1, Spire or RePro-1 have. The term "Reason sound" likely appeared because up until REs and lately VSTs were added everyone were using the same synths, drum machines, presets & refills.

And frankly - even if there was such thing: how would it matter for a piece of music to be good or bad? Just compare what we have now available for few $100 on a modest laptop with the quality (and size, and cost!!!) of the gear Pink Floyd, Beatles, Michael Jackson, The Prodigy or Orbital were using. Even better - look how certain gear, i.e. compressors, EQs, pre-amps, etc. - is nowadays idolised and cherished precisely due to their individual, characteristic sound…
