Live 4 - Utter amazement

I just got hold of Live 4 today and i am just totally gobsmacked by the possibilities :-o

I was initially playing with session view but after delving into arrangement view and messing with some slicing and stretching, it dawns on me that this thing totally urinates on ACID from a great height!

Time stretch and pitch shift individual slices and drag between any track. Use the warp tools on each individual slice too. I can barely take it in, the mind boggles. In a good way.

:D

just make sure you don't spend so much time fecking about with it that you forget to make music, Garet....Quincy

I've been to that place and it's not pretty :-o

.....but congratulations on your wise purchase :)

Dude thats all i've ever done. Probably finished 10 or 20 tracks in 10 years, and only 5 of any value whatsoever.

I'm firmly in this for the fun, if i actually produce a finished product thats just a bonus

I think this will help me finish a track or 2, the whole "scene" triggering concept is a stroke of genius, so easy for arrangement which is a stumbling block for me, and i believe many others.

certainly is for me, too :?

I tend to turn on Tapeit in my host (ext :D ) and just ride the faders and mute buttons by hand (well, mouse) to make an arrangement - hardly ideal

Not this one mate, its like EnergyXT. These kind of tools are so flexible and multi-purpose that its crazy not to keep them around.

I honestly can't imagine i'll get bored with this, i'm getting into DJing too and this just takes it to a different level.

Glad you like it quincy! I have really fallen in love with Live4 as well. It is so much fun to work with. You can totally take the simplest sound, pattern, whatever and jack it up six ways ta Sunday :D

If you haven't tried Impulse and Simpler, then get after it. Impulse has some great little tweaks like randomization and stretch. Its easy to get something movin with it. Simpler is great for throwing in a drone and tweakin it with the filters and whatnot.

A cool trick is that you can take a clip and drop it onto a simplar pad or onto the impulse and it will play it. So you can have a loop in a clip, jack it up and then move your endpoints around a section that you like and drop that into simpler or impulse. Then you can delete the clip and its still there! Very cool.

Anywho, glad you like it. Its definitely kick started my creativity :-)

Since I got Live 4, it has become my most used program. I start all my compositions there.

I encourage Live 4 fanatics to post on Ableton's web site in the "wish list" forum, so Live 5 can become the corporate DAW killer it was meant to be.

My top three wishes: Delay Compensation, Freeze, and high-end control surface support.

I just recently got my Live 4 too.

Mind boggling possibilities.

Load time is four minutes though, as it takes forever to read my VST plugs directory.

Latency is slower that SX too. I've had to take it up 1280 samples to avoid crackle.

But the on-the-fly stretch for my guitar riffs is so cool 8)

my favorite live 4 feature that is rarely mentioned is FOLLOW ACTIONS. Check out the manual on how to use them.

One use I've been exploring with is making 5-10 slightly different drum takes, and using follow actions to have a 'randomized' drummer feel. Its also cool to use to add random effects in random ways
If it sounds good it is good.

Glad you like it Sir Quince, so it all went through without any problems.

Don't you use ASIO drivers? It did crackle on my computer too, before I went to Live's audio config and switched the audio driver from MME/DirectX to ASIO. After that I've been using Live with 11ms latency.
Misspellers of the world, unit!
