Nope, trance (and all electronic music that's not strictly commercial) allows to use a variety of instruments, synths and drums, scales, techniques and sound design concepts. It's just most people don't do that.
Personally I try to make something different every time and don't repeat myself.

I was in touch with some of our local trance producers years back, some of them did make a sort of breakthrough (Sensorica, Playton). They had awesome technical skills but their mindset was like "you need to do this and that in certain way otherwise it's not trance". It was a local forum where people were posting their tracks made in Reason or Fruity Loops which were often criticized for sounding too oldschool or not trendy enough, "dude, Armin will never play something like that now, back to the drawing board"

It looked like these guys actually spent insane time to fit certain very strict sonic standards, not only in terms of production quality but also the composition and the overall feel. Though I have to admit it's the same for any other established genre. Speaking about psytrance, 10 years ago everybody tried to sound like Astrix (this was cool though) now everybody, including Astrix himself, tries to sound like Tristan or Outsiders (this is not so cool, they almost completely eliminated the melodic side of psy).

One thing I would probably like to tell the OP, if you like trance how it was 5 or 10 years ago and dislike how it sounds today, go ahead and make trance the way you like it.

Trance is a weird genre for me. Have been listening to it since I was a kid. It is by far my favorite genre, but only the older stuff. Now, it’s pretty shit and havent listened to, or even bothered to check out, any new releases in the last few years. Grew up listening to mixes my brother had at the time. He started going to parties in 97 when he got his car, and started listening to electronic music. I still have all his old CD’s. He eventually stopped listening to electronic music but I never did so inherited his unused albums. A lot of those CD’s are breaks, progressive, trance, etc... but to me theyll always be “trance” because thats what 11year old me knew it as. If it spaced me out, it was trance, of different flavors. Think that might be part of the “problem” now; everything is put into a strict category. If it doesnt have this. It isnt trance. If it doesnt sound like that, it isnt Micro-Minimal-LoFi house or some dumb shit. Listened to Northern Exposure by Sasha and Digweed. Surreal listening experience. Partially nostalgia. Partially blown away at how good old stuff was. Trance now is not even trance inducing. It’s all shit (well most of it, theres always less famous people putting out great stuff, in any genre. Just have to be a dramatic old fart

.) It’s hard for me to listen to some of those old albums. Nostalgia hits hard. With all that said, cant talk much shit if Im not putting out great trance choons myself. I digress.

IMO trance died about 15 years ago. It stopped being emotional and ended up being a painting by numbers cheesy pile of shite (unless you also count Jap/Fin freeform which is amazing) . I think the last great trance track I heard was DJ Puncher - Atlantis

I've listened to some of Kyau & Albert's Euphonic Sessions yesterday, and must say that i quite like it. Not comparable with the shit on A State of Trance nowadays.

I don't know about trance, but I love tech-house (genre) but I noticed that I only liked about 1 song in the tech-house top 50. Is it a younger generation making all the popular songs nowadays?

I love trance too, but I haven't noticed much trance I like since trance evolved into progressive in about 1999. Shame/pity.

But I'd bet every attempt has a 4/4 beat, some kind of build up and a breakdown.
