It has not been an issue until recently-
audacity is a 32bit application that runs on a 64bit windows platform... and while you can use vst FX, it will only use the 32bit version of these... some plugs are now ONLY available as 64bit...
I don't think there are any plans to make audacity a 64bit application...so here is my question:
Is there a 64bit equivalent of audacity (freeware audio editor that can utilize 64bit vst fx...) for windows at the moment?

Reaper isn't technically free, but it does includes an evaluation period that extends into eternity. It also includes quite a few useful audio processing plugins.

Thats a good idea!adammonroe wrote: ↑Fri Dec 13, 2019 10:20 pm Reaper isn't technically free, but it does includes an evaluation period that extends into eternity. It also includes quite a few useful audio processing plugins.
I hadn’t thought of Reaper for this purpose (...tried it many years ago...)
Im thinking it may be a little overkill for the purpose i have in mind, but will give it a shot.
Really just looking for a freeware stereo audio editor (wavelab, soundforge, audacity, etc) to finalize (I hesitate to say “master” because THAT is a skill i have never professed to own )
... thinking out loud now: i will have to see if Goldwave is 64bit (... don’t even know if it hosts VST‘s these days)
Thats another that I haven’t used in ages...

Wouldn't call this an alternative to Audacity, because it completely blows Audacity away on every front. And it's completely free too. Go get Tracktion 7.

Huh? Audacity is an audio editor, Tracktion is a DAW. Different focuses.RichieWitch wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2019 3:22 am Wouldn't call this an alternative to Audacity, because it completely blows Audacity away on every front. And it's completely free too. Go get Tracktion 7.

This is one of those headscratchers. For some reason, Audacity is a 64 bit application on Linux and Mac OS, but they can't seem to be bothered with the Windows version.

Same for me. By far the best free 64-bit editor since years and years. Tons of features, all perfectly efficient, and all are extremely simple to find and to understand. And a fully quiet use, no bug, no crash.

Some people actually use Audacity as a DAW?
I mean sure, it does its job adequately as far as recording and processing audio goes, but frankly, its feature set is too limited and its UI too obtuse for it to be a feasible alternative when compared to an actual dedicated DAW. It's the last option I'd consider for making music even on the amateur level. Invest in something like REAPER instead - it's great, affordable and customizable.
Of course, you're free to go with whichever DAW you wish. That said, REAPER is one of the more affordable choices out there. A personal license is only $60 or so.
