Going through and sorting old backup disks with song templates from years ago, what's your approach?

Decided to go through my external hard drives to go through and organize my backup disks with song templates etc. But its a mess. With song names like "test 2,2,3,4" and "demo" and they are all over the place and even duplicated of templates with the same name or different name. Did not realize I had to go through them all like this one day. And that I did not organize them better back in the day.

Anyone else has a similar experience of this and what's your approach to going through your old backup disks with song files?

TBH, it might just be a waste of time.
Have a quick sift through 30 or so of the templates, weigh up if they're any use compared to what you've got now (or in the past couple of years etc), and then forget about the vast majority of templates etc.
There's a reason why you haven't been too fussed / needed to reorganize them since several years ago...

Similarly (and I realize that this goes beyond your question) I would argue the same with people revisiting songs from say, 15 years ago. Unless there's some amazing song that you don't think you did justice to and you can now markedly improve it, I honestly wouldn't bother spending too much time with the old stuff.
If on the other hand you just want to do it out of curiosity or to see how much you've progressed, take your time.
But there's a reason why you're where you are as a (better) musician now and hopefully doing different projects / templates / songs instead.
YMMV of course and I realize that other musicians work differently from me (and have more patience / wish to revisit older projects etc than I do).

personally, i delete everything roughly once a year.
i find a totally blank slate inspiring.
as dark water says, are you going to ho through every single one? seems like a lot of time, you could be working on new stuff, which should, by virtue of being later, be better anyway.

i also find, im less stressed about older plugins working on a new os, or any loss of data.
not saying my way is for everybody. :)

I'm someone who would revise or remix some things as long as I live, but revisiting the whole project file or various versions strewn all about, no.
I seem to remember using CDs or DVDs to back things up kind of a long time ago but I haven't had an optical drive for years.
Since then I've literally lost everything 3 times and in the sense of not being able to reconstruct things this seems a blessing in disguise.
I'm sure I had project names which seemed to indicate some meaning at the time which would be gibberish today, but I finish everything and can cut my losses freely. I mean I know there's a couple of unrealized ideas that were good ideas but I moved on to the next thing.

I would recommend letting go, it can be liberating. We can think of it like this, once upon a time you committed the result to the medium and that's that, unless one was keeping a lot of tape around and had the means...
