Shiva - 141bpm Trance-ient?

I've been playing with my new toys - Sample Tank2 and M42 Nebula ( There should be a Government Wealth warning on KvR)
"Hanging around KvR can seriously affect your wealth"


Anyway, not sure where this tune fits in the scheme of things but your comments would be appreciated.

Interesting soundscapes.

The structure is not there,IMHO. It builds up but never really reaches its peak. At 2'00 I really wanted it to start pumping.

The sitar/tabla sample (starting at 00'55)is truncated in a very awkward way (at 1'07). It's disjointed with the kick that follows.

I like the mood though.

Forever Sun - thanks for listening - I think that structure and form are what I'm trying to nail right now (I'm a total novice in this style). The sample is grabbed of the net and used without cleaning it up properly so I know what your're saying. If this was more serious I guess I would take the time to polish it more. I will take another look and see how I can build it more from around 2.00.

I like the feeling of this but is sounds rather disjointes as allready stated...some good drug music tho'

I guess that this could work in a psy-club...I actually like the way the sitar is somewhat loose...the drums/beat is awful tho'

Give the kick more of a click and a pitch decay to get more of a psy feeling...Also, it sounds like there's some kind of slapbackdelay on the kick

I get the feeling that you wanted to do a nice ambient peice and then desided to slap a kick on it...An ambient version would have been more interesting...

I would feel more comfortable doing a totally ambient piece but no - I actually was trying for a kicking feel.

I really like this - except for the kick (which's been mentioned already anyway) and the hat, which seems way out of time somehow. If you nod your head to the rhythm, you end up being way off from the hat after a few bars - see what I mean?
The indian percussion sounds ok though I think and the sitar's good.
There's a part round 3 mins that really works well except the kick
It should be there - it just needs sorting out - take that delay off it? And sort the timing out? Quantize maybe?

The other sounds are spot on and the feel's great.
I'd to hear this when you've sorted that distracting percussion out .

Two or three HP fliltered snare layers on the 2nd & 4th beats will help it move

Thanks Glassback and Dj xion - what it comes down to is going back and doing the rhythm and percussion again from scratch. This song started out just as play but I do like the feel so I guess it is worth doing.

I've put up a new version of Shiva this evening. My solution to the out of sync-ness was not run the percussion and beats at the same time. Also added another layer of chanting. Maybe I've made it worse - it's certainly different.

I'm not sure what it was to start with and even less so now. That's just how it came out.

The sitar drones have sitar, tampura and also a french horn (for more body), layered in ST2. I had fun with the pitch bends

I think I'll leave the tune there and quit while I'm ahead. Time to think about this month's contest.

Percussion's a lot tighter - the overall feel is kind of spacier.

There was a sound that came in at 1'30 on the original that seems to have been buried (it now starts at 1'48 ). I liked that sound - I'd like to hear it slightly more upfront again, but there ya go.



Only two (minor) gripes.
During the build-up, there's a sound on the left channel that I think may be a percussion sound, I'm not sure. But it sounds like that noise you get on writable CD's when they start to wear out - do you know the sound I mean? I usually describe it as an army of ants marching across the disc, . It actually runs all the way through the tune and I can't make up my mind if it should be there or not.
Maybe it's just clever and glitchy eh?

The other thing is, if you open it in your audio editor of choice, the left channel clips slightly.
Not a great deal, but it does nonetheless.
Looking at the waveforms, the left channel looks out of balance to the right anyway. (as in it's louder overall)


I'd love this without that clicky CD-worn-outy effect but I don't suppose there's any chance of that?
So I'll just stick it in my Spacy Tunes folder.
