A couple of months ago In watched a film called Chappie which was quite good, and I really liked the track that played at the end of the film when the credits were rolling, which was called 'Enter the Ninja'. I did not realize that the main characters in the film produced the track. I also did not know that the female vocal was real, I thought it was a vocal from a Japanese manga cartoon or something. It was actually the real singing voice of Yolandi Visser a member of Die Antwoord which is Afrikaans for 'The Answer' a controversial South African hip hop group. Yolandi has one of the weirdest singing voices I have ever heard. I found myself quite liking some of thier stuff, although some of it is even too weird for me. Anyway I thought I would post some here for reaction. What do you think about this Afrikaans hip hop group. Weird or wonderful or a bit of both.
I left out the controversial non music videos that especially surround group member Ninja (Watkin Tudor Jones) apart from one at the end.Be warned there is explicit language in some of the videos as you would expect from a hip hop group.

freekily mesmerising.
When they first made a splash I was quite intrigued, certainly more exciting then most music I was hearing at the time. I gather they get a lot of stick, accusations of racism, homophobia, sexism etc etc which may be part of the plan, maybe misunderstanding the cultural intent/background, maybe all true, I don't know. A south african friend explained the whole zef thing so maybe in context... <shrug>
Still my favourite David Letterman performance though

I would not of thought it was the type of group that Letterman would have on is show. Anyway I just watched the video and Yolandi was definitely looking freeky with those black contacts in.

Yeah, not sure the audience knew what to make of them. Awkward laughing before the applause.

I said,
SIS, I am ashamed of them if people think they represent South Africa we have much more class than zef!!!
Zef= Scum, trailer trash, reprobate and all other adjectives that describes social disfunction
Here are far greater artists in South Africa and Die Antwoord along with Jack Parrow are the dreggs of the music industry here. To be honest anyone whos swears as much as they do in their music ( the real versions which our ears were punished with in SA should sue their parents for a lack of eduction and limited vocabulary! )
To make it easy for the Yanks to understand. .. like alot of you Dudes in the Usa feels about DTrumpets thats how we feel about Die Antwoord here in South Africa... they're stuck in the USA as they emmigrated and its good riddance..

no one thinks they represent south africa any more than any other group.
they just happen to be from there
it's one small subculture, that didn't form in a vacuum.
doesn't do for us to look down on others, there but for the grace of gods.
it's often about where we are born more than any choice we make.
born in the trailer park, i imagine you are branded at birth

Set against the other SA stereotype of being extremely conservatively religious this shock-pop is shocking.
Personally I have mixed feelings about them. I see it as send-up music and it's good for a laugh, especially if you understand the cultural in-jokes. It's some of the best globally relevant commercial music to come from SA and I'm proud of their creativity and out-there-ness in the same way I'm proud of Charlize Theron for making it big for being genuinely good at what she does.
But like all hip-hop or whichever art form you care to name which glamorizes unhealthy behaviour or attitudes, it's fun but kinda irresponsible. There are a lot of impressionable people out there who are easily influenced.

art should portray all of life, not just the pretty bits.
otherwise we leave a false depiction for those who follow, like all the pastoral hymns, were little else of that periods music in england is remembered, people here have a vision it was all lovely back then. had there been more of the "pop" songs of the day recorded for posterity, we would have all kinds of songs about pox, plagues and demons
pop music of the day would be drinking songs and such, a few of which do exist, and often do go in to the more unappetizing areas of life.
obviously fewer of those folk could write, so thats why there's less of them available.
as for die antwoord, what they did if nothing else, was show the world that south africa is no different from any other country, has its problems same as the rest of us.
don't be ashamed of them, be ashamed of the problems that create them and those vulnerable and impressionable enough to follow
