If Fender choses to discontinue Studio One for whatever reason and switches off the authentication servers you are out of luck. And this is not a theoretical scenario, this happens all the time.
Why am I out of luck?

Studio One at present does not call home to verify the license like a subscription will do. So the first thing I did after installing Windows 11 was to image the disk and make a few backup copies in various places. In the event of fender turning off the servers I will re-image the disk and should be good for quite a while. My first computer was an Atari running Cubase. If I still had that in the attic it would boot and work. Now I know that technically I do not own the license, but I own far more than a subscription would allow, which is nothing.

If you break the license agreement in any way, you can as well just download the software. Doesn't make any difference.

THE INTRANCER wrote: Sun Dec 12, 2021 6:46 am This is of course a theoretical question if we lived in such a dimension or parallel universe... but imagine if that was the case where there was no free software.. I dunno, one might have bought software with crystals on another planet. Maybe there is some world out there where that happens... who knows...
Clearly it would depend on how much they were asking. For $1 a year, I'd subscribe for sure but at $199 a year, I probably wouldn't. More realistically, $9 a month would be OK, $19 would require some serious thought. But the thing is, I wouldn't care if Studio One never got another update so if the subs plan wasn't appealing, I'd just keep using the version I already have.

I recently decided not to upgrade Cubase during their half-price sale, so Presonus would have to offer a pretty good deal to get me to pay for a Studio One subscription. One thing for sure, though, is that I would never, under any circumstances, go back to hardware.
BONES and I don't agree on much....sorry, buddy! ;-) But I agree with this. If we were in this speculative fictional universe, where only subscriptions were allowed for commercial software, it would totally depend on the price.

It's no secret that I use Linux and open source for most of what I do. Just like the Vegans, we Linux users let everyone know we use Linux! LOL! But if there was only the choice of subscription for commercial software, like BONES said, it would totally depend on the cost of the subscription. Even I would probably go for $1 a year. I've even now considered signing up for the Ardour donation subscription of $1, just to help the project along. $199 per year? No way. In all honesty, in a subscription-based world, I think the Ardour scheme is ideal:

The software is open source and available, but you subscribe to a monthly donation amount to fund continued development and support. I don't mind that at all.

some might take some of us as musical slaves. (like record companies) while others may just wipe us all out by sending a virus or something on an asteroid.

This thread is so quintessentially KVR.....LOL!! Give up MUSIC?? I don't need no stinking DAW to play my guitar. Now then....give up recording music? Also hells no. If I had to record on an Edison wax cylinder I would.

Hell I would subscribe to that. Provided they send someone to my house every month to change them all out.

Thats 2 basses, 5 electrics, an acoustic 6, an acoustic 12, a cigar box guitar, and 2 ukes. That might be a service I’d pay for.

sadly, it will be like those magazines
"build a replica sailing boat"

where each month you get a tiny piece of a model boat, you could have just bought from a model shop for the price of the first two issues.

Honestly, I mean this...if I was able to communicate with an alien the first thng I would ask would be about music, the second...wanna jam?
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

What would happen to KVRs "Buy & Sell" thread if everything went subscription?

Would it still have have a function?

Maybe for selling the remainder of an annual subscription that was paid upfront?
