You basically save like $350-500 depending on if you go Live Standard or Suite, and whether or not you're taking the discount coming from Lite (like $50 or so).
Plus you save over time cause Logic updates are impressive and free.
Logic forces macOS upgrades, which means that you can end up in a situation where you are stuck on an old version unless you upgrade a machine that otherwise works fine for your needs.

Apple makes back all of that cash you saved from software upgrades, easily.

The first time you upgrade your Mac for $1,000+ vs. just buying a new $350 CPU for your PC, they've already gotten about 5-8 years worth of upgrade costs out of you.

The free updates are unremarkable.

I'd say the updates are pretty remarkable. They expanded sampled instruments library over the years and still keep adding content. Camel Phat, Alchemy, etc. Added two new samplers, drum machine designer, drummer, live loops. I can't even recall all the other features added over the years. They have been pretty significant and they've been doing that at least twice a year for almost 10 years straight. I think only FLStudio can say they do something similar but even they don't give you the added instruments etc for free.

As for the whole $1000 vs $350 thing. It's not that bad of a tradeoff. I can usually sell my Mac and it retains its value pretty well.

I can still get $520 for my 13" MBP from 2018. I can barely get $200 from my Dell Latitude from the same year. Where I work we junk those. A Razerblade 2017 14" barely sells for $362. A Razerblade Stealth which is the same spec as the 13" MBP goes for $282 in the used market.

I just sell my machine a year after AppleCare is up and pass whatever I make on to a new Mac. I can usually knock off $500 or more off the price tag.

Latest Mac OS Monterey is compatible with Mac Pro from 2013 which is 9 years old, so I do not see this mentioned push for new hardware by Apple.

The hardware lasts 7-ish years before the OS leaves it behind, but Logic updates usually only last about 2-3 OS versions before being left behind. It's all a trade-off. I replaced my slow 2014 with a fast 2021 and was able to update past LP10.5.

Admittedly, I could have updated my old MBP's OS still, but it's officially hit vintage status and I wanted it frozen at Mojave as the last 32-bit support (a couple of older plugins and apps.)
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better? :(

What OS your machine supports doesn't matter. Its what OS Logic supports. Additionally, Mac Pros are the best case scenario. Any iMac from 2013 has already been dropped from support by Apple, years ago.

Pretty sure Mojave was the end of the line for my 2013 iMac ;-)

Most people aren't buying Mac Pros. Its why Apple doesn't refresh that line as often. Being able to upgrade components like the GPU allow for extended support, though.

That outlier doesn't define a rule, however.

My 2013 Mini is running Big Sur just fine. There are ways.

If someone doesn't use many 3rd party plugins, it is indeed no problem to update to the latest macOS....

Yeah Ableton optimizes stuff like creating groups, sound design, creating racks, etc, but personally I feel the actual music writing is way better in Logic or Cubase.

When working on something I spend a lot more time in the piano roll than anywhere else so optimizing for track creation is not really so critical for me. Stuff like being able to properly edit velocities or being able to open the piano roll in a new window make writing music much easier.

The session view is great when sketching out ideas, but when I get down to it I always end up working in the arrangement view which I've always hated in Live. Again, Logic or Cubase are way better in this respect.

And I paid more to upgrade from Live 9 Suite to Live 10 Suite than what Logic costs...

Bottom line is:
If you are music composer, producer, arranger, composer - Logic Pro
If you are a DJ, performing live, Ableton is the answer

I don't depend on hacks for stuff that my business depends on.

It's easier to just get a PC and not have to worry about this.

I did get an M1 MBP when they released, but returned it because the benefits weren't worth the massively increased cost when you add the RAM (16GB) and Storage (1TB) upgrades into the equation. Much cheaper to get a PC and just put 32GB RAM and 2TB NVMe in it myself. Still saved about $400.

I must have doing something wrong all these years.... :)

In my opinion there is a big difference, between making music in Ableton Live and making music in a traditional DAW like Logic. It's the workflow.

You know how they say that people who quit smoking are the worst, because they feel the need to push their "non-smokiness" to smokers all the time? Maybe I've become that guy regarding Macs? Sorry for that :?
