How does macro 1 differ from the other macros? No matter what I can't alter its value. The manual doesn't differentiate between the macros. What gives?

Well for me there is. I can change the values of the others but not macro 1.
Mac Catalina and Live 11 fwtw.

I'd send them a bug report. Might well be specific to Mac OS and Live 11, because, I can't reproduce that in Savihost and Studio One 4 under Windows 11.

I had the same problem. Disabled MPE mode in settings and all was well.

I had MPE disabled, by the way, so, that might be the reason I didn't run into that bug, if it has to do with it.

for clarity in MPE mode Macro 1 is assigned to slide, CC74... so that is why it is greyed out...
