I just bought a basic midi keyboard and it came with a copy of Bitwig.
I can basically read music and just learning to use the keyboard.
I don't expect to become a proficient keyboardist and I don't want to or have a need to use very complex software.
My main goals are creating simple two or three part short melodies with the midi keyboard, having them appear and save as traditional music notation in real time as I play each part and also being able to use the mouse to select and position notes. And also to be able to load fairly high quality vst's.
Could someone please recommend a program with a very simple and easy to learn interface for Windows PC that fits this requirement.
I asked ChatGPT and it recommended PreSonus Notation. But I'm aware that ChatGPT just throws out any suggestion a lot of the time so I thought I'd do an old skool enquiry and ask experienced humans.

Perhaps I can also ask for the best paid program that fits the above requirements but also if there are any free ones that come close?

Presonus Notation does not work on certain PCs, but support is aware of it and will facilitate a refund if your machine is one of them. At least they did for me. Unfortunately, it's kept me from buying anything else from them.

I ended up going with Finale from Make Music. Although I actually rarely open it now since I've learned that reading music is almost considered negatively archaic in today's world.

I also find that all of them are not as intuitive as they could be.

MuseScore is capable, free, and open source.

MuseScore is enough considering your usage case is simple.

Just downloaded Musescore.
Seems pretty cool.

Musescore is good imo

musescore is good, but when i would write for orchestra, i always felt like my workflow was stifled when i wasnt using sibelius. its so fast and intuitive, but it is kind of expensive upfront

Dorico if you are willing to spend the money. MuseScore is very good for free.

I noticed that Dorice SE was free and I was "in the market" for notation software so I gave it a go and test it. And it made me install one thousand little thingies and whatnots and after all that the interface and everything about it made me almost lose my mind. Probably a nifty program if you are more patient, hell, maybe you even like it straight up.

I also tried MuseScore 4 and it didn't work out for me either. Also had to install a hub program for that, and only later did I realize that the hub program was running in the background, not cool. MuseScore seemed ok but I didn't like it.

Maybe I need to shell out money for a program that fits me better, but I'm afraid I'm too stupid to like any of them, whether they are free or not 👍
