Transient shaper - reduce the attack
Compressor (FET or VCA style ideally) - attack set to fast
subtractive EQ - high shelf and/or notches at audio peaks
the Oeksound Soothe plugin - reduces resonances

Checkout Airwindows Tape Bias and some of his more recent slew based processors. They can do convincing analog-esque softening of short transient events etc. If you want the digital option, try licking the peaks with a limiter that has a long lookahead. It's not really softening or more like pushing back, burying etc

Transformer distortion is known to kill sharp transients and smooth things out
