Acustica Audio debuts THING - Iconic '80s Synth Reimagined for a New Era

I beta tested it in the last month or so, I made a quick demo of some of the presets:
I never had the chance of owning or playing a real Jupiter-8, but the sound is really convincing, in my opinion, compared to other "vst" emulation. TH-8 should be (mostly?) "sampled" from 2 actual units, not emulated, AFAIK

Interesting, don't have the hardware (and most likely never going to have) so it's good to have somebody checking it out. ThanksFrankie.T wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 5:38 amI did, and tbh i like Thing more. The sound is real and it's far more versatile, the original doesn't even have velocity, very hard to work today without that tbh.0degree wrote: Fri Nov 29, 2024 9:56 pm Anybody had a chance to compare this with the real synth? How close is it?
For people who compared it with other vst's just take a closer look on how different the poly function is at each key stroke, with thing the voice difference sounds much more realistic to me, also when you play multiple notes, the "free running" sounds real because it's correctly implemented, while other synts just turn the osc off to spare cpu, but the result is a weak transient response.
If you also have a chance to compare it with the real one, just have fun comparing the cross mod with both hardware and other plugins, and you see the attention of details, and why this plugin is wild.

Someone that works with Acustica Audio just so happens to like Thing more than a hardware Jupiter 8. That's a pretty hilarious joke.Frankie.T wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 5:38 amI did, and tbh i like Thing more. You should also probably know that free running oscillators are not even remotely new or interesting and are implemented by many, many, many, many softsynths. Also, why would a non-free running oscillator result in a weak transient response?

The sound is good, but not 10x better. Compared with Diva and OP-X Pro 3, you can get the same sounds in one or the other. 100 EUR now with discount, should be 50 EUR, then it's a no brainer. If you have Diva or OP-X no need to G.A.S, save some money for Nexus 5.

Yep. It has Eco, Normal (default) and Mega mode. The differences are huge.

I’ve barely all plugins released form the 90 but I always stay away form acustica. Overpriced crao imho. Get diva. Live happy.

THING combines DSP-based modeling with analog circuit behavior emulation.
MUST (Modular Unified Synthesis Technology) is a hybrid synthesis technology that integrates the precision of analog circuit behavior modeling with Acustica Audio’s signature convolution-based approach. It incorporates advanced features such as nonlinear convolution, dynamic Volterra series, and time-varying models to reproduce analog hardware's complexities and nuances faithfully.
Additionally, many of the FX are from our Acqua line-up.

The demo is a 760 megs so is some of the synth sample based or "convolution" based ?Acustica Community wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 3:12 pm with Acustica Audio’s signature convolution-based approach.

The size is due to several factors actually; on the one hand, in mega Mode, THiNG implements Dynamic Volterra kernels (from our Nebula architecture); when you’re using the equalizer, it is a real sampled EQ, Ch3rry, like the other FX as I mentioned earlier, and also the graphics on the synth take its fair share (which are reduced on TH5 for simplicity).Teksonik wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 3:32 pmThe demo is a 760 megs so is some of the synth sample based or "convolution" based ?Acustica Community wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 3:12 pm with Acustica Audio’s signature convolution-based approach.

You didn't answer the question. Is some of the synth sample based or "convolution" based ?

Ok I say the following as someone who is a huge fan of sampled based synthesis. It is without a doubt capable of a wider range of sounds than any other method.
But sampled or not I've tried the demo and have already uninstalled it since I found the overall sound unpleasant and the CPU demand way too much despite claims to the contrary.
The fact that it's limited to 8 note poly was the nail in the coffin but I suppose any higher poly would melt down most top end systems.
Good luck with the project but it's just not for me.

No but it certainly was a great session of buzzword bingoTeksonik wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 4:08 pm You didn't answer the question. Is some of the synth sample based or "convolution" based ?

My thoughts exactly! In my opinion the whole project is more corporate hype and buzzwords than actual substance but I'm sure others will disagree.DashOfLime wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 4:23 pmNo but it certainly was a great session of buzzword bingoTeksonik wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2024 4:08 pm You didn't answer the question.
