ChameleonMusic wrote: Thu Nov 07, 2024 9:33 pm So many good things I can say about this, I'd be here all night!

The overall flow is very well judged with parts just dropping (or sometimes fading) in and out at exactly the right moments.

Some of the textures are simply magical.

Subtle yet hooky melodic content in various parts.

Production is also very good to my ear, although I do think eassae has a point regarding a little bit of high frequency harshness in the opening section - seems to be steep peaks that zip out of the otherwise smooth mix...3kHz - 6kHz area? which is one of those mini frequency bands that the human ear can be very sensitive to.

Same (but to a lesser degree) with the lead sound that first enters at 3:38

Neither really affected my enjoyment of the listening experience, but I was aware of them in the back of my mind...if that makes sense?

One more listen!
I was aware of those pesky highs, but decided to wait until somebody pointed them out before dealing with them :D

I remixed it 2-3 weeks ago, but wanted to be sure that I hadn't removed too much from the picture. After listening to the original vs. the remix so many times within a couple of days, my ears had become desensitized to the music, so I let it sit on my hard drive for a couple of weeks to cool off. I've uploaded the new mix, because I think it's an improvement on the original. I reduced the corner freqs on the LPF for almost all of the Absynth instances and increased the EQ attenuation on those frequency bands. I also took the opportunity to give the low-end a minor clean-up.

Thanks very much for the detailed and thoughtful comments, Mark. Glad you enjoyed it :tu:
Listened through a couple more times to the new mix...

Hard to compare without the old one as well, but it certainly didn't strike me as harsh in those moments that I mentioned before!

I listened to the new mix. Personally I would roll off some more high frequencies during the first minute. It sounds fine to me once the bass comes in. I am possibly overly sensitive to high frequencies so perhaps no additional adjustment is needed.

I love the atmosphere.

Gorgeous soundscape Tim! The sound palette is beautiful, and I so enjoy long-form atmospheric beauties like this. Definitely evokes a spacey vibe for me.

I really like the section beginning around 1:30 with that repeating synth part. That part stayed constant for almost 2:00 minutes but you kept interest by moving a lot of different parts in and out in the background during that time. Fantastic arranging and sounds.
Most of the "decorative" sounds are from Absynth, although the bass synth parts (which seem to be heavily influenced by late '70s or early '80s TD) are a combination of Absynth, ACE and ARP2600V3.

The arrangement and mix really came together this summer. I seem to have become more comfortable working in MuLab after taking a break from working on this piece.

Thanks very much for listening and taking the time to comment, ecamburn. Glad you liked it :)

Thanks very much for having another listen, or two, Mark. I think this mix is cleaner than the original, but I didn't want to rush into it - festina lente!

I'll take another look at the mix next year when I put this on an album, but I haven't decided whether to release it on an ambient album or within some other genre.

Thanks very much for taking another listen and for the comments, Frantz :tu:

I'm only just starting to discover the joys of Absynth, and the depths available within it. Late to the party again

I know how you feel. I mute the volume during ads! Makes such a difference to the mood of a show.
Lovely music for such a tense subject. In fact I will think of this and zen out when needed.

I knew what you meant, but Google's AI was perplexed :)

It's -2°C outside here at the moment. I'd prefer some more energetic/active listening under these conditions :)

80% of adverts here in the UK seem to consist of people shouting inanities (much like current politicians). The rest of them merely make dubious claims or contain saccharine AI-voiced insincerity.

My next track will probably be a little more "challenging" :scared:
