Authority figures @ Summer NAMM suggested the AES show time frame.... But that's long since past... Any news? Updates? Demos? Sneak peak mp3s? As a newbie to the forums, I have to say it's a great place.

Hey, I was about to post a Studiophonik question, but I'll tack it on here instead--

In another thread, you mentioned horns. Are we talkin' blues/jazz-style horns? I've always been a fan of Motown music, but I've never attempted to write my own because horns are a vital ingredient for so many of the tracks that I love. As a hobbyist, I don't expect absolutely earth-shattering realism and uber-programmability, but will I be able to pass off a reasonable 'horn section' with Studiophonik?

Well, as you can see with Sonik Synth 2 we set a high stardard even for ourselves to follow up with. So, in order for it to have 2 packed DVDs of studio instruments... there's some work being done! SR guys are working on that plus that mega drum library we're also doing and probably someone has been working on it every day for about a year and half? Wow, if you consider the value of what it costs that is totally worth it (really, I used to have people pay me $100 per hour to program and sample for them. This would be the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of hours with everyone involved).

Anyway, we're working on it and don't want to rush it. We're making a really great module here! Studiophonik is going to be an awesome thing. I can't wait personally until it is done. I will use it heavily as I do Sonik Synth 2.

As to the horns, they are not the same dedicated material that the guitar, bass and drums have in SPK but they are discrete so you can layer them and pan them. They are pop horn sections ala Steely Dan, Chicago, EWF (in fact, I have to road test them next week playing WITH EWF - or members of the group minus the horn section - so I'll let you know how THAT goes  They BETTER be good in other words. ;) ).

For MORE horns with different effects, styles, mutes etc. we have an Expansion Tank title coming out some time in the first Quarter next year (not announced yet but mentioned a few times on the forum.... see? Squids spills a few beans still.)

Post

Cool. I already play bass and guitar, and got the Combi Kits in the group buy... so I'm not entirely sure about SPK yet, but I'm definitely curious.

Now I'm even more curious about the Expansion Tank, since they're usually such a reasonable price. ;)

Yeah, SPK might be overkill for you then. But, the horn library could be just what you need. That's why we have those ala carte options!

Having said that, Studiophonik is a LOT of fun being in the driver's seat of the dream session situation "No, I want a Gretsch, a hollow body, no a Duojet" Kind of like that car commercial where the guy is asking for all kinds of car makes and models that pop up... a commercial here anyway.

I can see how that would be appealing. Which is the only reason I'm still considering one of those fairly ugly-looking Variax guitars. :hihi:

I'm not a competent enough keyboardest to do good things with a guitar virtual instrument, though I've done semi-ok with a bass before.

The Variax 700 is a very good guitar, and it does sound good. I miss my collegue's a lot.

Greg, how can you still be awake? You are a 24 hour posting machine. Of course, I am awake to read them all so go figure.

Heh, it goes something like this:

I work afternoons and sometimes evenings. That means I get to sleep in. So, I spend most of the evening actually "doing" stuff (ie. marking papers, walking my dog) but spend a few seconds in-between in order to post here. ;) Then when it's bedtime (ie. 2:00 am) I find myself checking 'view your posts' one last time, and before you know it, it's 3:00am or later.

;)

Usually, I end up getting into debates/arguments with numpties. I'm really as bad as they are because I can't just leave well enough alone. :D

Studiophonik sounds like it is gonna be great! You can count on a customer here. :) Since you're taking your time making this,,, there should be time to get some more great brass samples in it before the release.

Keep up the good work squids!

Brass Expansion Tank not until next year.

Oh well - I'm sure I'll get over it.

EWF? Sorry can't place this. Who is that?

 Oh yeah. Forgot about them. Never was into them though.

That's OK. When I was a kid I thought "We don't get fooled again" was "We don't get food again".

I had a friend who was absolutely positive that on 10CC's "I'm Not In Love" where they whisper "big boys don't cry" they were actually saying "request of quad." He thought it was some kind of propaganda for the quadraphonic format. He was just a little ahead of his time.
