Um the whole Cher thing....

While Cher did use autotune, there is clearly a talk box or vocoder on the echo response and backing vocals of that track, and THAT is what was being asked.

And yes, I believe (see what I did there) that this is the box she used.

I used to be into vocoders and had the Digitech talker. It's pretty good, not for a high price, not as good as the Electrix Warpfactory.

I've never been into software vocoders except for PIf vocoder.

It’s a vocoder, but it uses a different technique to most vocoders. The Talker uses linear predictive coding, rather than lots of band pass filters.

Interestingly, the Talker and Electrix Warpfactory were made by the same company (IVL, who is now known as TC Helicon). The Talker and Warpfactory seem to run a similar algorithm and are incredibly close, with the right settings.

A friend and I are working on a plugin we think will end up pretty close. You can here a comparison here: Talker vs new plugin

Blezz Beats Vocodine sounds very much like it.

That’s so cool. I think they’ve done a great job. I’m not sure it’s really like the Talker though? A lot closer to a talk box emulation?

Oh yes, sounds _very_ good :)
Any chance we can get on the beta?

I did not know that. I have the Warpfactory here.

Thanks! Yep. We’re probably a few weeks away from a beta. I’ll DM you.

Ace! It’s a nice vocoder.

Here’s a comparison I made between lots of vocoders. The Talker is right after the Warp Factory in the comparison.

04:04 Electrix Warp Factory
04:15 DigiTech Talker (talkbox setting)

TC Helicon is now owned by Music Tribe/Behringer. It’d be great if they made a new Talker. Oh, another fun fact: It was called Guitar-Talker prior to release. That name can be seen in early ads.

hey Marc, great video.

Question for you. I used the Warp Factory for some spoken word, I was finding it was dropping "x". As in "DX7" became "D 7" I thought I maybe had the "Ess Off" but I'm using the front XLR Mic input, looking at the manual the "Ess" on and off only works with then inputs round the back?

Do you have a Sennheiser? I went a bit mad a few years back so I also have the Korg DVP-1 (apparently used by Air) and a Roland SVC 350.

It's nice to find someone else who is into Vocoders!

I've always found Reason's BVX to be superb. It's super comprehensive.

You obviously do classic vocoding but also it has an inbuilt pitch tracker that can be quantised to a scale so you don't need to play any notes to trigger the synth.

It also has the audio input available as a mod source as both pitch and amplitude and that can modulate the formant control to get talk box like sounds.

The manual isn’t very clear about it, and I haven’t done much testing with my Warp Factory. You may know this, but “ess on” means it’ll do unvoiced detection, and switch the carrier when it detects there’s a sibilant sound. I’m not sure if it uses white noise or the original voice input for sibilant sounds. Will have to test! NuVo on the Talker uses the original sound though, so maybe it’s the same.

The manual really isn’t clear though, is it?
Mic: Uses the front panel microphone input as the formant source. Line (Ess on): Uses the line input for Formant control. Ess enhances articulation for better intelligibility. This is best for vocal based formant signals. Line (Ess off): Best for non-vocal inputs.
It could be that the mic input does have unvoiced detection. We’d have to check.

The Talker does unvoiced detection when in the NuVo program. The TalkBox program doesn’t switch, so the carrier is always the input you send it.

I wish I had a Sennheiser! I was able to find someone for the comparison. I own most of the vocoders in the comparison, except the VSM201 and the Ensoniq DP/4+. The SVC-350 is great. I also like the Korg DVP-1, and will hopefully get one at some point. :D

@ Marc. I've seen DVP-1 prices go up alot. I bought a number of 80s/90s digital stuff when the real interest was in analogue so I got things relatively cheap.

DVP-1 got relatively poor reviews when it came out but I suspect Air using one pushed the prices up. I can't really remember what the vocoder is like, I've only recently managed to find the correct bits of wirage that connects it's MIDI, power and audio outs to use it. It has a nice vocal synth, not great but there is an ok choir (bit like Logan Vocalist but thinner) and a nice solo lady voice with autobend.

Kind of! I’ll post here, but I have also just created a YouTube channel. The plugin will likely be the first thing we post, and you could unsubscribe after that if you didn’t want other videos.

Great to hear you picked yours up before the madness! It does sound good on Kelly Watch The Stars etc.
