I love the 1176. It’s a classic for a reason.

The way it saturates is incredibly musical. The release has some fantastic program dependent behaviour.

It’s not by any means a clean compressor. It has a very strong box tone. It kills on guitar, bass, Snare, Drum bus and vocals where appropriate.

I think it was black dog by Led zeppelin that had two 1176s in series to make the guitar tone.

They are indeed sounding different, though give a similar hype. A have so many of them. Favorites are Softube Fet mk2, PSP FetPressor and Brainwox Purple Audio MC77.
