The next big thing in waveform is generally just another sale email full of hyperbole.
I opened one today for 13.5 "The cutting edge of automation" clip automation, but no automation clips, yep, right on the edge of cut hahaha.

Check the traction engine github and look at activity. It can give a clue as to what Dave (and Jules atm) are working on. Recent mentions being ARA2, multichannel support, etc. None of this means it is guaranteed to end up in Waveform, (but it will imo)

Looks like Waveform 14 is in public beta now. Here some of the highlights that stand out to me:
1. Projects are now folder-based (related: DAWproject import/export)
2. ARA2
3. Multi-channel/surround
4. UI changes, including the removal of one of my personal favourite components: the expanded Controls Panel. But the good news is you have more control over colours.
5. AI assistant, which doesn't interest me at all but I guess it's the hip new thing and has to be mentioned

Surely there must be consensus by now...

This should have been made persistent, not eliminated.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

You need to sign up for it (via link in email) and then it gets included in the Download Manager. I should note that I needed to click the link in the email twice for some reason.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

A context-sensitive Controls Panel (horizontal) was the old future. A context-sensitive Actions Panel (vertical) is the new future.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

This can't be right - must be something that's just missing in the beta for some reason, right?pough wrote: Wed Apr 22, 2026 6:56 pm ...including the removal of one of my personal favourite components: the expanded Controls Panel.
Tracktion's object editor is too precious of an original GUI element to get rid of... after all it's better (more versatile and powerful) than Samplitude's object editor which is universally praised - why'd they ever remove that?
edit: nope, it's really on purpose.

If I'm not mistaken, the Actions Panel does everything that the Controls Panel used to do and more with extra features (fave, show, hide) and arguably takes up better space on widescreen monitors.
My initial reaction is annoyance but I can probably adjust eventually and maybe even prefer it. It's not a deal-breaker for me. I lived through the loss of the bendy arrows, after all.

ok...good to know...when i think about I'd be worried a lot of the information elements and controls wont lend themselves to a vertical orientation...my gut says it's bad CHI but I'll try and remain optimistic like youpough wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2026 2:44 am If I'm not mistaken, the Actions Panel does everything that the Controls Panel used to do and more with extra features (fave, show, hide) and arguably takes up better space on widescreen monitors.

Actually I think it has a lot to do with how our brain tends to be wired "in the West". We are used to process information much rather horizontally than vertically.bermudagold wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2026 4:02 amok...good to know...when i think about I'd be worried a lot of the information elements and controls wont lend themselves to a vertical orientation...my gut says it's bad CHI but I'll try and remain optimistic like youpough wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2026 2:44 am If I'm not mistaken, the Actions Panel does everything that the Controls Panel used to do and more with extra features (fave, show, hide) and arguably takes up better space on widescreen monitors.

E.g. the Chinese often write/read top to bottom and might actually tend to prefer the Actions Panel.
But I think it's a bit ironic that now that we finally have a full (now relatively conventional) mixer, they start ordering other stuff (exclusively) vertically that always was aligned more horizontally.
Plus, of course, central means central and to the side means to the side...
