Frameshift” originated from a piano improvisation centered on a recurring theme. During development, I experimented with shifting the pulse of the opening piano motif—essentially displacing its rhythmic anchor.

This created a complex puzzle for the bass and drum arrangements, as the foundational "one" was no longer where the ear expected it to be. I view this technique as a musical “frameshift.”

In biology, a frameshift mutation occurs when the reading frame of a DNA sequence is shifted, causing the entire genetic code to be translated into something completely different from that point forward.

By applying this concept to a musical pulse, a familiar melody is suddenly "read" by the listener in a new light, much like the rhythmic illusions famously mastered by the Pat Metheny Group in their piece, “First Circle.”

To capture the layered, ethereal textures required for this shifting landscape, I used a nylon-string MIDI guitar to trigger two distinct synth tracks simultaneously, blending organic touch with digital complexity. Soma Flux and LinnStrument (Absynth 6) were added for additional textures.

This is very good! It sounds like a live ensemble. Back in the day, we loved to go into Chicago to The Jazz Showcase. Joe would often have the top college jazz players come in and jam. This brings back great memories.

Thanks! I am definitely trying for a live feel. Until recently, I was in a jazz fusion group but our drummer passed away last year. I am still jamming with the bass player and guitar player so it may evolve into another project.

Another enjoyable listen. Nice work as always jcub.
When the data is corrupt in the Desert of the Real, Beyond the Last Thought, where intuition reigns, is the solace that will embolden and strengthen the soul, giving hope once more to this age of failing technique. eassae.com
