Well all, this thread has been dead for a while now, but just thought I'd let everyone know I finally nailed the problem.

It had nothing to do with anything suggested, so you can all add this to your arsenal of "things that can make something go wrong in the audio chain".

It was a recently purchased USB cordless mouse from Tschibo here in Germany. Actually it wasn't the mouse itself but the chord which had both a hot plug extension and a recharger, both sprouting out of a single USB port. I don't konw the technical side of its interference. I only know this. I unplugged it and the problem went bye bye, on the spot.
