hi - i like vst effects dat responed to midi notes

like philterkeys the note controlled filter -

does anyone no any other good free effects like this

- im really looking for things like

ringmodulater where frequncey is controlled by note

chorus/flanger where frequncey/speed is controlled by note

delay where delay time is ... etc

im not looking for expensive vst synths that can do this
and i know you can set up most host to do this anyway but i dont want to waste time with dat

Ringmodulators:

You can get The Modulater 2 from NDC for a little MIDI action. arcDev also had a truly fantastic little unit called the Decoder that you can still get here: http://www.freesoundeditor.com/incagene ... g.htm~main

Both these units are free.

What host are you using? If it's FL, you can use the Keyboard Controller to make any effect respond to midi notes in the same way you describe.

Post

...if the plugin responds to automation, then yes, any plugin can be made to respond to MIDI.

Post

If I recall correctly dover666's Dead Ringer ringmodulator responds to midi notes.

I've never used the keyboard controller for MIDI in FL. I just use a MIDI out plugin and configure the knobs to accept whatever CC numbers I want. I'm also piling up on my own plugin Dashboard presets so that my MIDI controllable plugins all come with a custom MIDI ready interface. You can configurer own GUI's and everything :tu: It means I don't have to keep looking at manuals for their CC's or configuring all the time :hihi: FL's pretty sweet like that. :band:

DFX Midi Gater
  • MIDI Gater is a simple, handy, MIDI-controlled gate. When you play a MIDI note, audio turns on. When you release the note, audio turns off. MIDI Gater is a little unusual, though, because it is "polyphonic." What that means is that a copy of the audio signal is created for every MIDI note, and the volume of each copy is sensitive to note velocity. The level of sensitivity is adjustable. The volume between notes is also adjustable, in case you don't want your audio signal turning off completely.
MadShitfa
  • root: root note, if MIDI "Note on" messages are received the
audio is pitched relatively to that note in semitones
hold/back: describes MIDI behaviour: "hold" means the relative
distance between root and current note stays the current pitch,
if "back" is set, it falls back to the original pitch once a "note off"
    is received
Dfx Buffer Override
  • Buffer Override can overcome your host app's audio processing buffer size and then (unsuccessfully) override that new buffer size to be a smaller buffer size. It makes a lot more sense if you just try it out and hear what it does. It can sound like a stuttery vocoder or a stuck beat shuffler or many other delightful things. In certain hosts, you can also "play" Buffer Override via MIDI notes and even sync it to song tempo.
Dfx Rez Synth
  • Rez Synth allows you to "play" bandpass resonant filter banks that process your sound. In the right hosts, MIDI notes can trigger individual filters or banks of filters (up to 30 per note) with controllable frequency separation.
Dfx Skidder
  • Skidder turns your sound on and off. While that may not sound very rewarding, you have a great deal of control over the rate, pulsewidth, on/off slope, panning width, etc. You can also relinquish some control to randomization. Skidder can also sync with your song tempo and can be triggered by MIDI notes.
Admiral Quality Scamp
  • SCAMP is a resonant low-/high-pass filter plug-in. It features a separate envelope follower for each of 6 channels, a host-syncable LFO with multiple waveforms, as well as Admiral Quality's special Gliss-quanti feature for creating staircased LFO waveforms from the basic waveshapes. Also supported is full automation and MIDI CC control of all parameters.

SCAMP closely models the actual circuit paths of real world analog circuits, which makes it a processor-intensive effect; expect SCAMP to require processing power similar to the level of a powerful soft-synth.

    Cost: *edit* $39.95 USD ($69.95 after September 1, 2006)
ConcreteFx MicroDicer
  • MicroDicer is an easy to use, flexible beat-slicing VST plug-in for Windows. It can use both WAV and REX 1 & 2 files, and it allows dragging and dropping of both slices & MIDI, in to and out of the plug-in.

Each MIDI note can trigger any slice, with each triggered slice having its own pitch, volume, panning, choke group, output channel and playback mode.

    Cost: $40
CamelAudio CamelSpace
  • MIDI notes can be used to switch on different patterns for different effect parameters. When a note is received for a given parameter, all other patterns routed to that destination are switch off; only the specified pattern is used.

    Cost: $85
Tobybear PeakFreak and other midi note tools
  • PeakFreak, a little VST effect plugin/utility that converts audio input that falls into a certain frequency and amplitude range into midi notes of a certain length. Dunno how many plugins are out there that can do this too, but maybe someone can use it.
ndc Plugs Buffer Synth Alpha
  • A fairly lo-fi effect. When you send it a MIDI note, it will play back the contents of it's buffer at the note's pitch.
ndc Plugs MIDI-Controlled ADSR v1.00
  • A simple ADSR envelope plugin, triggered with MIDI notes.
ndc Plugs Random Pattern Delay
  • A pitched (i.e. very short) delay effect, with a pattern sequencer to control it. Not the most useful plugin, but you might find a place for it if you like weird electronic noises.

There's an option on the GUI to "Control Pitches With Midi Notes
ndc Plugs Tempo Sync Reverser
  • Reverses the sound for a set amount of time (set according to note length) when the Reverse button is pressed. Probably best in a live environment, hence the option to assign a MIDI CC or note to trigger the reversing operation.

You've also got good old vocoders, which combine two inputs -- carrier and modulator -- to derive their output. Typical use is to modulate a synth carrier with a voice or instrumental modulator, resulting in a "roboticized" result. In this case the carrier-generating synth and vocoder can be considered to be an "effects group" and the MIDI input to the carrier synth determines the apparent pitch of the output.

[edit] Nice list, runagate! I'm a CamelFan m'self. Great stuff.

Ohmforce OhMyGod
  • Ohmygod is intended to work half like a VST effect, half like an instrument. It takes both audio and MIDI notes as input.

Mono mode works a bit like Normal mode, except that sound pitch is controlled by the latest incoming MIDI note. In Poly mode it is like a real synth, you have to feed it with MIDI notes, otherwise it won't output anything.

    Only available for bundle customers.
(the cheapest of which is €299!?)
scuzzphut
  • scuzzphut6.5-lite takes the step sequencer from scuzzphut6 and makes it a dedicated plugin with several improvements, including
improved GUI - both in terms of looks and functionailty
steps can be set/cleared by dragging
    CPU use now minimal
    pattern selector for 8 patterns
pattern changes happen sync'd to the bar start
midi control of pattern changes - midi notes C to G (any octave) select patterns 1-8.
scuzzphut phutboyslim
  • Phutboyslim is a quick 'n' dirty inline sampler. It is designed to be inserted in the master output fx rack and functions by constantly sampling the last "x" beats of the input signal (your whole mix, usually). When it receives a midi note, it constantly plays back that buffer until the midi note is released, at which point the source material is allowed through again. Think of the stuttering samples in yer typical fatboy slim tune and you'll have a good idea of what phutboyslim can do for you.
scuzzphut philterkeyz
  • philterkeyz is a resonant filter plugin with a difference.

Filter cutoff is controlled by midi notes and the cutoff frequency is calculated to match the frequency of each note.

Try inserting it after a vsti playing a riff. Feed that same riff to the plugin and the filter provides an added dimension.

Alternatively, try inserting it after a long sweeping pad sound, then routing your midi keyboard to philterkeyz. Raise the resonance and you can play a filter line over the top of the pad.
scuzzphut switchphilter
  • A very simple plugin as suggested by "deaneager" in this kvr thread. switchphilter is a filter with cutoff and resonance controls. The difference is that above 50% cutoff it acts as a high pass filter, whereas below 50% it's a low pass filter. Uses the hosts own GUI - two simple controls.

Thanks runagate.

Note that SCAMP is still $39.95 until September 1st! And offers a free, 7 day FULLY FUNCTIONING evaluation period.

Oh, and it's been greatly optimized since that blurb was written as well. As well as defaulting to 2 channel instead of 6 channel operation so people don't get confused about it using more power than it really does.

Cheers!

Fabfilter Volcano
  • FabFilter has released FabFilter Volcano version 1.1 which introduces the following new features (plus a few bug fixes):
    EG MIDI note-on triggering.
    LFO MIDI note-on triggering.
    Filter frequency MIDI note-on triggering.
    Dotted/Triplets mode for the LFOs.
Option to link the cut-off, peak and panning knobs for both filters.
Two new filter characteristics 'Gentle' and 'Extreme'.

    Cost: $139
ConcreteFx Brush
  • BrushFX - MIDI controlled comb filter VST effect for Windows, this uses the same architecture as Brushsyn to create phaser effects, reverb, distortions and many other unique effects.

    Features:
Midi control of comb filter, so they can be tuned to incoming MIDI notes.
Comb filter pitch can be altered by volume of incoming sound
Also include is a full manual and 64 presets.

    Cost: $35
{as an aside ConcreteFx Woo vowel theremin is freaking sweet!!!)

Tobybear VowelSynth

This is a simple VST plugin by Tobybear using the formant filter algorithm from Alex (alex @ smartelectronix).
  • VowelSynth is a VSTi that reacts to MIDI input by generating a (non-bandlimited) waveform (saw, square or noise) of the appropriate frequency and then filters this waveform with Alex' formant filter. Simple envelope and glide control is also included. VowelFilter is the effect version of this plugin which processes the audio input with the formant filter. If you have a host that can send MIDI notes to effect plugins, you can also use the effect plugin just like the regular synth: as soon as a MIDI note is received, the appropriate waveform will be generated.

Anyone got any more to contribute to this list?

I know there are more, but I haven't thought up which ones yet.

Post

Easy like a Sunday morning bump.

Post

The nice thing about Midi-note fx is that they send quantized data.

That's not something I like - I generally work in curves.
But it's quite useful sometimes and I can definitely relate to the original poster's desire to press a key and have a delay be 1/8th notes, another and it's 1 bar delays... there's many easy-to-imagine variations on this.

No one has any others to list here?

Wow... ...these links you've already provided...I mean...holy crap.
Thanks...appreciate the effort. It helps...
