Lightweight tracker / beatbox ??

Audio Plugin Hosts and other audio software applications discussion

Don't laugh... I have this ancient Pentium75 laptop with 24MB RAM, and want to use it as a simple drum box: play drum samples in patterns.

A lightweight host like SaviHost combined with a VST plugin is probably too much for it, but I recall it can handle playing MOD files! So a simple tracker would get me there.

Any one know of something usable for me? My requirements are:
  • compose patterns in 16th notes
  • compose patterns into songs
  • easy / intuitive GUI
  • can play 16bits WAV samples
  • runs on Windows98
  • light on memory & CPU

Agreed, FT2 is awesome. I've used that a lot in the past.

And if you have a sudden musician's block, you can play the built-in "Nibbles" game :D

Well, MoonFish looks promising. I'll have a look this weekend at home.
Thanks so far, but keep 'em coming!

I've been thinking about doing a 10 year anniversary edition of Moonfish.

New technology, same bizarre limitations (and maybe optimized for the lowest low end of the computer spectrum, including tiny netbooks etc.) :D

Please please please do it! I still have MoonFish, it's cool cool cool!
BTW Bram: I've been wondering since I bought this new dual core machine with Vista: MoonFish runs on it ok, Tu free 1.5 does too, but Tu2 crashes like hell. I had to uninstall it, though considered buying from earlier experience (I had a several years stint with Mac, but had tried all your free stuff in preceding years)
Erm.. what's wrong with Tu2? Is it dualcore or Vista?

Hammerhead to make some beats, Moonfish to make weirder beats.
I still use the Moonfish. Which other sequencer does more than 1000 BPM?

Hey Yan! Yes, ofcourse I remember you from the mailing list! A lot of people 'from the old days' seem to be still around. Good times for sure. :)
