i don't think any of us have mentioned national anthem - radiohead. so simple but so powerful.

Great bassline, played by Thom for a change. Which reminds me of Primal Scream's Swastika Eyes, played by Mani, who of course played all those brilliant Stone Roses blines.

And if we're making sweeping statements then virtualy all the Terminal Cheescake ones. Who were played by pretty much anyone in the band, one of which, Russell Smith played in God, as mentioned previous by someone who slips my mind.

Sorry mate, but the bass on "My Generation" is pick played. It's just too obvious. Listen to it again...
No need to even mention that he's been using a pick when I saw them live (in 89 or so).

in one of the stores I worked in Billy Sheehan was there for a day...he arrived quite early which was cool...but what was even cooler was seeing him jam in the bass department with his prize Yamaha...he did some stuff that blew my mind...then he bought a used bass pre-amp from me (well the store), apparently he loved this pre and wanted to stockpile them...I listened to Billy all day, then he did some songs with some local musicians that night...surely some of the best bass playing I've seen was when he was kicked back trying out his favorite piece of gear. He had no constraints he just cut loose, and for quite a while...

this needs to be answered....

i'll humbly say sorry if i'm wrong, but i always thought it was fingers...in the movie he does it with fingers....i do remember reading he broke several strings while recording the part, but "picking out a phrase" won't prove anything, some dudes that finger pick guitar can make it sound like a "plectrum" ala Jeff Beck...

take a look at the Kids are alright video, you will see him playing that part with his fingers.

the part is played with fingers, I saw him do a clinic some years ago where he actually played those parts note for note.

they mention his typewriter method as on My generation...i nver heard of typing with a pick...

it's not that big of deal, i ain't fighting about it...you prove he used a pick...i couldn't find anything else, i'll look later...

ok, last one i promise. another radiohead song - myxomatosis. how did they get those buzzy tones? that can't be all overdrive, can it? are they copying the bass part with a sawtooth sound on a synth?
