Yes, they are making things sound fatter. What AndrewSimon was talking about was how the limiter handled them, not that he wanted them gone.

all i was meaning is that i find Finis, which i blindly bought on the premise that it would be as good as the rest of the EAS plugs, cannot be pushed as hard as MPL1 or Elephant. The sound tends to break up very early and the pumping is very harsh. As a peak limiter Finis is ok on individual tracks but as a mastering limiter it's fairly unuasable on the types of music im working with.

We got a few ideas we are working on. We will coordinate these ideas with mastering engineers, so we are not just presenting products we think is great, but also products they find meaningful. So for now I can't say much besides that we will be back with some more goodies

This sounds very promising indeed. As I'm about to set up my own little mastering business sometime next winter I'm going to keep an eye on this. No matter what kind of processor you are concieveing I hope that Mid/Side techniques in various ways come to play as they can be true lifesavers!

I only have serious pumping problems in mode III. I love the warmth of Finis, but it is not good at all for loudness maximizing. It is a good master limiter for mellower tracks, and a good general purpose track limiter. I think you can push the gain with good results in terms of musicality. I haven't noticed it distorting badly, but it isn't clean either. I, like you, am disappointed in it's maximizing capabilities (particularly for the price, which was more than Torben's plug), but I think it is a very musical compressor in terms of sound quality.

bduffy...every limiting/maximizing implementation has it's own particular strength or weakness depending on what you intend to accomplish. I think Torben has done a brilliant job of coming up with a good balance of loudness capability, and cleanliness. For the majority of cases involving a *reasonable* amount of gain increase the MPL-1 performs exceptionally well, The definition and coherance is stable and clean, the stereo doesn't collapse, and the deep end is well behaved....and it's bleeding cheap.

If you need more level than what the MPL-1 can comfortably give you, then your only option is to simply clip the audio. The choice must be made whether to intelligently shape the transients (dynamics manipulation) or progressively take the tops right off...or an effective combination of the two.

As to which is the "best" approach, this depends entirely on the goal...and possibly the opinions, educated or otherwise, of the one you ask. It is quite difficult to make solid endorsments when the expectations of the end users are many and varied...

...and oft times, simply unrealistic.

TOP limiter. Did comparision between Finis, Ozone - MPL-1 wins in terms of loudness and cleanliness of signal. Price is very competetive...but...I already have limiters and if we're speaking about limiters I'm thinking this way - price per track. For example - 99$ worth EQ. I have song with 30 tracks. Every track contains this EQ, so it comes down to 3.3$/track. Limiter I need maximum 15 times in year i.e. this is maximum number of songs I'm making in year

Huh...hope you'll get an idea...

I tested both for half an hour and they had an excellent
bass respons.

Sad that there were no presets and that it is not possible to render with the demo.

It would have been nice to be able to look at how eg clippings are handled in a rendered file, before buying.

That was my feedback as well. I wished I could have seen the clipped waveforms.

I went ahead and bought it anyway. When I went back to take a look, I noticed that it was easy to over do it and to get "square waves". But then I backed off a bit, and was very pleased with the results (and it was a lot louder). Hope that helps, Bob.
