considering all goes well with this and everybody enjoys it, and of course if my financials let me, i'm willing to do it again next year.

Seriously the gui thing annoyed me a bit. The problem is that a nice gui is really required to lift a plugin. Think about it: You've ordered the nicest dish and when you get it served it has no taste at all, just a slight test of the paperdish it is served on. Do you get me? Good that you changed the rule.

Sounds fine, but how should the users rate the plugins they aren't able to test (PC only plugins for a MAC user or vice versa, etc)? That's the only thing I find a bit... "troublesome".tuz wrote:so far for rules i have:
submissions = free for all
any platform, any type (pc, mac, instrument, effect, emu, pm, standalone, se, sm, c++, host) anything goes... as long as it's developed for the purposes of assisting with music making, it's in. i'm not sure about sample packs because they might be hard to d/l for some.
submissions will begin june 15th and end september 14th.
submissions will be sent to me and i will hold onto them until the release date.
all submissions will be released on september 15th for public voting.
voting will end september 30th. ***might change depending on the amount of entries. if there's a hundred, obviously we'll give more time for people to play with them.
people have to vote for all entries from highest to lowest.
winner(s) will be announced on october 1st or 2nd and first place will get $500.00.
in case a dev needs a beta tester, they will contact me and i will direct them to a beta tester.
:p
Not sure I've said it, so I say it now. This is an awesome initiative tuz!

Yes, I think assigning beta testers is a very good idea. However, make sure you don't assign too many beta testers because beta testers tend to be biased towards what they tested because they know it well. Maybe have 5 beta testers to go around, each developer gets assigned 2 of them, special consideration regarding macs?tuz wrote: in case a dev needs a beta tester, they will contact me and i will direct them to a beta tester.
Also, maybe you can also assign artists for the less skilled among us. I know exactly how I want the GUI layed out but I would like somebody to make it look pretty, and maybe give me further ideas on the layout.

that would also mean using another vendor string in the plugin, because an anonymous plugin classified under "mdsp @ smartelectronix" wouldn't be anonymous...tuz wrote:tweakbench wrote:i'm intending to do a new tweakbench creation for this compo and release it on the appropriate day, but it will still be a normal release for my site..
does that conflict with any of the rules?
based on a suggestion, i was considering anonymous submissions with original guis so people wouldn't know who they're voting for. if this is ok with everybody, would you consider releasing it after the voting is over?
when i say original guis, i mean one that wouldn't give you away. so would you, all of you i mean, be ok with your submissions having somewhat different guis than your usual?
I understand the motivation for anonymous voting but in this case It would only complicate things for everyone.

Perhaps we could rate the plug's GUI on the basis: "how much does this plug make me want to buy a PC / mac?"stefancrs wrote: Sounds fine, but how should the users rate the plugins they aren't able to test (PC only plugins for a MAC user or vice versa, etc)?
Sounds like fun anyway, count me in

Yes, agreed. Even though I think anonymous is cool, in Audio Units world you can't change the Manufacturer ID from anonymous to the developer's without breaking compatibility to projects already done with a plugin. This would be a major drag... so, for a hassle free mode, I'd vote against anonymous.mdsp wrote:I understand the motivation for anonymous voting but in this case It would only complicate things for everyone.
(Well, based on the strange file structure of my plugins, everyone will identify a u-he plug anyway, no matter what the label says...)

I don't think anyone else using SynthMaker has joined the competition yet, and it's not like it's impossible to spot if a dll comes from SynthMaker or not, would make my product quite non-anonymous...

2 beta testers?!? I can't work this wayarke wrote:Maybe have 5 beta testers to go around, each developer gets assigned 2 of them, special consideration regarding macs?
Seriously, I already have a quite nice beta group and a good mode to work with them. I'd be very happy if I didn't have to work on another basis. However, if it must be, I'll do it with a bunch of strangers, but I need at least 2 for each format (AU, VST Mac, AU & VST for Intel Macs, VST Win) with different configurations, i.e. at least one expert for Fruity Loops and one for Sonar.
Cheers,

Well, I'm completely new to this and you're not, so that might be why
Regarding your own beta group, I think if you already have your own beta testers then you dont need to be assigned any, it was just for people like me that don't have anybody that could beta test.

Get as many testers as you can handlearke wrote:Regarding your own beta group, I think if you already have your own beta testers then you dont need to be assigned any, it was just for people like me that don't have anybody that could beta test.
Beta testing is best done within a mailing list or a forum. If you try to work with just email, you'll have to answer each and every question again and again.

Do you know of any free mailing list thing or something similar?
