First off, it seems like some people are equating accuracy with translatability or portability. Accuracy is a fairly objective and quantifiable measure, whereas translatability (portability) is a really subjective measure (Just look at the two guys arguing about NS-10s). Certainly the two are related, but that doesn't mean you can't have headphones that are highly accurate but don't translate well to other systems, or monitors that translate well to all kinds of systems but which are inaccurate and unsuited for detail work. That's why you should check your mixes on a variety of setups.
As far as the idea that headphones CAN'T be accurate is concerned, I suggest some research before making such claims:

-http://headwize.com/tech/headrm1_tech.htm
-http://www.headwize.com/articles/judging_art.htm
as well as ER's library of peer-reviewed journal publications at -http://www.etymotic.com/aer/libart-category.aspx

Ultimately it's all just a matter of whether or not you can achieve a certain result with the tools you choose. For me, I can get good mixes of my material working on 'phones for 60-70 percent of the process. It also happens that I like headphones for regular listening as well. Is everyone else going to? Of course not. People on here seem to forget that despite all the technical stuff involved, what we do is still art. If it wasn't, we wouldn't need humans to do it (man wouldn't that make Sony/BMG and all the rest happy).

Oh, and if you want to discuss the illusory nature of perception, I'd try the philosophy dept. at the nearest Uni.
Thank you for the links. I agree with some of what you said. I hope the philosophy dept. thing was a joke. I can't tell, because as far as I know I was talking about the auditory illusions that headphones cause (are the sounds really coming from inside your head? Or is it an illusion?) - and nothing philosophical. It would be a shame if you missed my point because of prejudice against a word like "illusion".

I also prefer headphones for regular listening most of the time, because, like I said, they seem to smooth out the imperfections in mixes, and I like to listen to a lot of indie music - not always the most scrupulously produced, and sometimes mixed by amateurs (such as myself).

I also think it's possible to do a lot of useful work with headphones. Specifically, though, I don't think it's possible to tell the difference between (for instance) synth patches which all sound good on headphones but only one of which sounds good on both headphones and speakers. The same is true of EQ. Add in the frequency response problems that many 'phones have, and you're making your job much harder.

About the whole "art" issue. The headphones argument is purely technical, unless you consider sound reproduction to be your art. The art of MUSIC, however, I really don't need synths, plugins, mixers, recorders, computers, speakers, headphones, or anything else to take part in. So this conversation isn't really a matter of art. IT's a matter of technology. If I want to communicate what I hear in my head to my listeners as transparently as possible, I'd better learn how to mix properly. Since I'm somewhat interested in making such an attempt, it makes sense to get the fine points of mixing "ironed out" so to speak. - whether or not the crap I hear in my head is worth listening to is another question altogether, and one much more closely related to something I'd be willing to call "art".

Finally, since I'm not an audio engineer, I'm not very well acquainted with the mathematical quantity of playback "accuracy" . . .IF this is defined in terms like frequency response biases or response attack for sharp transients, then I agree that headphones can be highly "accurate", however it would be silly for you to argue that headphones can tell you anything about room-level stereo interactions, and it seems from my contention that "portability" is really what I'm after here, not necessarily "accuracy".

Now, I'm not sure whether "portability" is really subjective as you say. I'm not an engineer so I don't want to get into fine semantic distinctions, but it's my impression that portability would have to do the amount of information retained (not distorted or lost) across platform changes. If you can't turn the volume on your monitors up high enough to hear the rest of the parts because you've got a killer resonance problem at 500hz (only an example), you've distorted information about your music that would be obvious if you listened in headphones. But if I can mix in an environment where such phase/stereo resonance problems would be apparent, I can fix them with little to no audible effect on the headphone's sound. In my eyes, my stereo mixed music would be quantifiably more "portable" than your headphone mix because I can only listen to yours on headphones, but I can listen to mine on both headphones and speakers. The same paradigm can be used when defining portability from monitor to monitor, considering issues like bass response.

In short, I'd much rather have a couple of different sets of monitors (or one set that can emulate the frequency responses of many different types of speakers) than a set of headphones and a set of monitors - at least for straight mixing applications. Now when it comes to composing on the go, field recording, listening to mp3s of your favorite band, and the like, of course I'm going to wear headphones. And it's conceivable that those kinds of things could make up 60-70% of your music life. But that other 30% is mixing and eqing.

[quote="stash98"]I think a pair of mix headphones is mandatory for the studio. They allow you to hear detail and phase issues that you may miss on nearfields./quote]

I've been in hundreds of professional studios, and not once was I offered a pair of headphones to mix in.

The best way to check for phase problems is to listen in a proper environment (which headphones are not) in mono.

I can very well live with different opinions. but you did not express opinion but made quite strong claims such as "There's no such thing as mixing for headphones" and "If it's well mixed for stereoloudspeakers, it will be just fine for headphones". If I combine the latter claim with your opinion (which I share) that the sound representation in headphones and speakers differ it is, of course, a logical contradiction. I do have no idea how you come to claim that if it sounds good on stereo speakers it will sound good on headphones. my personal experience is different and I certainly disagree that speakers are per see better than headphones. they are different. and they do not present less information. they supply enough dynamic and frequency range to give a good represenation of audio.

1. An opinion is stil opinion no matter how strong the claim is - there's nothing inherently un-opinionlike about a statement like "There's no such thing as mixing for headphones" In my opinion, there isn't such a thing as mixing specifically for headphones. There's mixing so badly that you can only listen to it on headphones, but in my mind that's different.

2. Apparently either you haven't read my latest post, or my explanation of my opinion is not clear enough. It is not simply my opinion that the represenations differ. Headphones are monitors. They're just really badly placed and oddly shaped monitors.

3. If you're going to say I'm making a "logical contradiction", I'm goign to ask you to give me a simple logical demonstration of where the contradiction is. In my eyes, I haven't made enough claims for them to be in contradiction. Certainly the opinions of mine that you quote in this post do NOT constitute a contradiction.
While we agree that there are differences between headphones and speakers, we disagree very strongly about where you seem to think we agree. Headphones are not a "different but equal" replacement for monitors. You can't just get "accustomed" to headphones enough to make good mixes.
First and foremost,It is my opinion that headphones give less mixing-relevant information than monitors. This is Non-contradictory with my subordinate claim that headphones and speakers are different. Let me spell it out for you -

1. Headphones and speakers are different.
2. Speakers are better than headphones.

Where's the contradiction?!

4. At the end of your post you seem to realize a directly opposing opinion. This is a refreshing new development. Now that we have agreed to disagree, we can find evidence for our opinions and possibly come to a resolution. Of course I know there are more pressing things demanding your attention, but when you get the chance, I'd love to see the sources which lead you to believe that "they are different. and they do not present less information. they supply enough dynamic and frequency range to give a good represenation of audio."
if we ignore the very basic problem that there is nothing like certainty, then ther is for sure a difference between an opinion (usch is a subjective statement) and a claim (which is a subjective statement that claims objectivity).
about the contradiction in your statement:
if we understand 1 as that there is a substantial difference between headphones and speakers (like different stereo representation) then point 2 does not make sense unless it is a mere aesthetic remark. it is like saying, banjos are different from guitars, guitars are better.
regarding the point of giving evidence for the suitableness of headphones please refer to any spec sheet or comrarative test of high quality headphones.

Let me see if I understand what you're saying here (your language does seem somewhat unclear to me, but I'll do my best).

1. I don't know what you mean "the very basic problem that there is nothing like certainty", but since you say we'll ignore it, then I'll let it go.

2. The difference you posit between a claim and an opinion is superficial at best. You're saying that if I say "Milk is better than Orange Juice" that's a claim, but if I say "In my opinion, milk is better than orange juice" or "I like milk better than orange juice" that's an opinion?
But what if I really believe that Milk is OBJECTIVELY better than orange juice? Does that belief cease to be an opinion just because I say it with confidence or certainty? In my eyes, if I take a position on an arguable issue, that position is my opinion, whether it's stated in "certain" terms, or in terms of "preference". I said it. It's my opinion. If you want to disagree, that's fine, but you must see that this is a semantic dead end. It's my opinion, based on my reading and listening, that headphones are quantifiably less useful for mixing. Of course I could be wrong. But if I thought I WAS wrong, it wouldn't be my opinion now would it?

3. How does my 2. not make sense in light of 1. ? Better and worse are a kind of different. It's a very simple point I'm making. If A is better than B, A can't also be the same as B. There's no contradiction there.

4. My standard for judging "better" in a mixing context has NOTHING TO DO WITH AESTHETICS!!!!
I can't say this enough. I'm saying that there's quantifiably less information given by headphones. If you want to make a really crappy sounding mix, it's going to be EASIER TO DO EVEN THAT with speakers than with headphones. Mixing with headphones is (in my opinion) a roll of the dice.

5. Your guitar/banjo example is a good one. Suppose I said something like "Guitars and banjos are way different. Guitars hold way more air, and if you fell off a ship, you couldn't keep yourself afloat with a banjo" - You could disagree with me in a few different ways. You could disagree with my CRITERIA for saying that guitars are better - something like "Why would you judge musical instruments based on flotation abilities? Banjos have much more timbral flexibility, and that's what's important". You could disagree with the definitions used in my claim, like "Sure, guitars float better if we're talking about accoustic guitars and clear weather so that the hole doesn't fill up, but banjos have enclosed bodies, and in a storm situation you can easily remove the neck and body casing, producing a life-saving floatation device. When your guitar fills up with rain, it's just going to bog you down". Finally, you could disagree with the factual evidence for my claim, something like "Did you pull those numbers for clear weather flotation out of your ass? Every publication I've found clearly puts guitars at the bottom of the flotation totem pole, far below banjos. What is that citation from, a blog? You need to get your numbers from a verifiable double blind study at least."

I hope that wasn't too0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o discombobulated.

6. "please refer to any spec sheet or comrarative test of high quality headphones."
I don't know what you're asking me to do. Partly because I don't know what kind of spec sheet you're talking about, or who performs these comparative tests. The information I've looked at is generally in article form, by writers or producers who write for the purpose of giving advice. If we're going to get down to the nitty gritty and argue "Specs" directly, it's going to complicate the debate somewhat, as we'll have to come to an understanding as to what each of the "specs" really means in terms of mixing-relevant information.

Actually I tried to do this at one point in my perfect headphone search, IMO it's somewhat meaningless. Headphones are way to close to an individuals ear and intrusion of personal space to make the experience any less than, um personal... :hihi: An example of this is me ending up with a pair of Beyer DT880's that I use once in a blue moon. Lot's of folks LOVE these. After reading specs and reviews I thought - oh yes these are the ones...NO, not for me. For me they're unbalanced (everything is to some extent) in a way I can't personally resolve during mixing or finalizing.

Headphones really have to be heard to be appreciated, it's much worse than the subjective nature of speaker selection for me.
