There's nothing to stop people knocking out plugins over the next few weeks if they want to, but for the sake of the DC it might be best to delay the competition until 2009. The members here are always complaining of buggy, unimaginative professional software - if KVR gives DC developers enough time then we should see a raft of useful, well-behaved, innovative plugins. :)

nice idea!

Wasn't aware personally that this was in a stage of debate lately, due to personal issues through most of the summer.

But Roberson Audio is back on track overall and ready to enter into competition again.

So +1 to getting the DC train rolling again, beit this year or '09.

Instead of setting up an off-the-cuff contest, why not just set up some annual rules? For example, the contest begins each year using the following parameters, etc... This way, there is continuity and a bit of rhythm to the whole ordeal.

Please understand that the competition loses credibility when a year goes by and nothing happens. By setting the table for a planned annual event, some developers can actually plan a year in advance. In other words, it's OK for a developer to miss a year, but not the actual contest- it must go on. When other organisations (e.g. Computer Magazine) mention this contest in their own communications, it lends credibility to the achievements and the web site. However, they might tend to be be a bit stand-offish, if this gala becomes too...ad hoc.

Even if only a few developers compete in a particular year, it's important that the show goes on. Of course, some years will be better than others. Isn't that always the case? Regardless, the organisation effort(s) should be long-lasting.

Please note: I'm approaching this from a business standpoint and not a selfish free plugin perspective.
I've got nothing to sell...am I on the right site?

Can't speak for anyone else involved, but I dropped the ball 'cos lately I'm spending most of my time trying to earn barely enough to cover the bills. There's very little time left over to undertake something this big again so soon after the end of the previous contest. In fact, I've still got to clear up a few prizes that haven't made their ways to the winners, probably due to over-zealous spam filters at some point. (My apologies to any who haven't got their goodies. Please PM me if you haven't done so recently!)

What matter which digit is at the end of the name? It's the same contest. It'll happen. Please be patient... or find someone smarter/faster than me to handle prizes; that would work too. I'm no expert, just the "Hobson's choice" candidate.

I don't believe it is the same contest, and I believe the last digit does matter to a certain degree. People have to plan ahead, have a dependable date to prepare for, set goals, build anticipation. I think a lot of the developers were getting into that mindset, getting ready to organize. It's an event for everyone, anticipation and planning is an important factor. When the contest got drug out, or how I view it, didn't happen at all, it put a damper on everyone's enthusiasm, for both the developers and the rest of the community. Everyone's moved onto other things, a bit less interested or expectant, and some will tune it out all together the next time. Once things become spotty and unreliable, they naturally don't hold people's attention. It's a little bit like the lock out season that happened in baseball, that sport has had a hard time keeping the fans interested since then, and many have never returned.

If Ben or yourself couldn't handle it this last year then you probably should have had someone else do it, or announce that you would be stepping aside for the year. But it sounded as if you guys held the reigns on things, said it was going to happen, so people did their best to be patient, but eventually that grew to frustration over unmet expectations. Jeez, you're not getting all those hot groupies, and big bucks for nothing you know :x

I'm only going on about it because I think it could have continued to be a special event that grew and developed lots of interest, which is good for the developers and the audio software community as a whole, especially at KVR. I totally understand how running this kind of event can become overwhelming when you've got a busy life to manage, but just step aside for the year if that's the case, and let others handle it, or announce it won't be happening until the following year.

It's not the end of the world, but it is somewhat disappointing, and pushes a lot of people to lose interest. But hopefully you'll receive much support and positive thinking from this point on, and maybe things will get a bit more organized and consitant in the future. It's something that the developers and the community really look forward to (screw x-mas :hihi: ). It would be nice if the Developer's Challenge could become an annual event.

Actually, I stepped in for the very end and will try to do deal with related stuff this year. But I am emphatically not an organizer. The overall management will have to be done by someone far less scatterbrained and absent-minded than I.

Ok, I don't know all the specifics of how you guys have this all planned, but it sounds like we need to find someone to organize next years Developers Challenge then right? Any candidates for that position yet, or should we start a "Help Wanted" thread to find those most qualified to run the event? Maybe for a little incentive, the winning candidate could get a little publicity as payment, where it's mentioned that people should thank the person in charge by checking out their mp3's, artwork or whatever. Just a small underwriting promotion.

you mean, like the existing 'organisational help wanted' thread, which has rapidly been filled by posts from folk not actually wanting to help organise?

you should 'just' sort it all out for us.
