Ok guys ... this may be the way to go.

Mac, overlapping comps has become the norm .. and in some ways, thats possibly why it feels weird when only one is running at whatever stage .. except, the supplementary/companion comp NA2SC1 is open.

Timing the overlapping comps? It's a bit like when a ball rolls down a hill ... it doesnt stop at the bottom ... it maintains its energy, and retains the momentum to climb at least partially up the next hill ... so all it needs is a bit of help to make up the difference, get over the top, and start rolling again.
To stop that ball, you either have to actively take away from its momentum by stopping/slowing it at any point, or ... passively ... neglecting to make up the difference. OR!!!! .. you can organise it so that subsequent hills take less effort to climb!

The idea I have proposed does not make it significantly easier, or even much different in terms of workload/timescale, but the predictability of it will take the confusion/disorientation out, and prob make it more accessible/workable from the point of view of someone requiring to keep things up to speed on a dedicated website/wiki/whatever. :)

Anyone interested in doing a bit of jobshare ... feel free to post here, or Pm me. :) :)

I can donate some space on my webserver it it's any interest, hell we should find a suitable domain name and make a proper site of it! I can help out if you want to.

That's very kind, but wouldn't the best be something that is totally free and won't close or expire due to volunteers or even companies quitting?

Not everyone likes Google, but Google Sites gives 100mb space and allows for shared access etc. An mp3 player with all songs playlisted would also be cool and I think possible, but maybe not if the files are at 4shared.

Ok, I now made a site at Google sites: http://sites.google.com/site/kvrosc

There's not much there atm, it's just a start to see if you like the idea.

All of you can be collaborators there, login is with email addresses that's put on a list of collabs, so PM it to me and I'll put you on.

The site can be edited directly from the browser and I find it very easy. There's even html editing for more advanced stuff.

Hey V'ger, that looks really cool! :)

Fraid I'm a bit rushed right now, but I'll hopefully catch up later tonight and toss a few ideas into the mix :)

Great Stuff Steplton, doubt you will get last with that.. :)

Uploaded the submissions so far to archive.org

http://www.archive.org/details/KvrOsc17Basic64

This will give direct links to mp3 and nice download speed. The tunes are even put up in a player automatically.

Uploading was also very fast and easy as all the files in a folder could be selected in one go.

Trouble with archive.org is that uploading to the same folder for all is not possible, but I'll ask them for a solution.

Cheers for the submission Steplton :) ... good luck in the comp!

Sorry, may have to delay launch of OSC18 a bit ... but by all means carry on working on your Soha Sonata tracks :)

I've had a look at how I sync the dates of overlapping comps, and in keeping with the plan described above, the closing date for OSC18-Soha Sonata, would land on the 8th of August ... nearly 6 weeks away. Also I have to put a word to meffy re the launch ( for a sticky ), and check with V'ger what is required of me to link with the website ... and i've not really got my head around what to ask V'ger ... other than, should tracks be submitted to a 4 shared folder as usual? or can this be done directly?

V'ger, if you could take a look at a previous launch post, and a previous vote starter post and get back to me re. how this needs to change to accomodate the site, then that would be super.

So, I dont think I'll manage to have all this sorted out by tomorrow, and I'm off gigging in Donegal over the weekend ... but luckily, theres plenty time, and the 4 week submission period would still be intact even if the comp was launched on the 12th july ... same date as close of OSC17 submissions ... but will surely have it launched before then :)

Oh WOW! I just checked out the entries so far, amazing work

It's great to hear the variety of sounds and styles you got out of a single synth, and some great compositions too! bravo!

I totally agree, and I must say, that as a newbie myself, kind of intimidating. I'm not sure I dare to submit my amateur tune now :?

I would say just put a link to the site http://sites.google.com/site/kvrosc at the top of the post, that's all. Tracks can still be uploaded to 4shared as before until I find out more about a shared folder at archive.org and all agree to changing.

But as you can see, archive.org is really nice with automatic playlist and player, direct links to files and if you see to the left even a way to download all files in a zip file, all done automatically which is brilliant.

hi gaiz: noob question-
I am guessing automating parameters is a bit much for these comps, but that automating, say track volume for mixing purposes is fine. What about ducking sounds? With free eq instead of a compressor.

Don't worry about your answer- it won't affect my piece. I'm done, just need to render it out, but the thought occurred to me so I thought I'd ask....in time for 18 :)

To my understanding automating parameters is fine, couldn't have done the latest two contest entries without and frankly don't see the point in limiting the musicianship that way.

After all most of electronic music leans heavily on automation ( name a techno song without lp filter "opening" cradually towards brake ). Limiting the automation of the synth in question would also bend the competition more towards traditional music forms and appriciation for "studio wisardry" and electronic music would be left out.
