No, I do not mean parallel compression (also known as NY compression). I actually mean the signal detection mode.

ReaComp can either use Feed Forward (most modern compressors) or Feed Back (vintage design, more soft). And it also has ton of settings for either peak compression, or more RMS type compression.

If I take a look at certain vintage compressors in software form: LAxA, 1176, DBX16x, JoeMeek, Manley VariMu (NI for example), etc. They are mostly "feedback". That means, the signal runs through the compressor "once" until the detection module says "wait buddy, too strong signal - adapt!".

Modern compressors mostly do that right after the input, making it a more technical and clean compressor. IIRC, the SSL comps are of such design, and of course most digital creations on the market unless explicitly mentioned. (like that one mentioned free Feedback Compressor in here).

RhythmInMind has an excellent SynthEdit creation (actually two plugins) that shows exactly that difference.

Now, again, if MCompressor would have that mode, I could stop mourning about not being able to use the ReaPlugs anymore. Yes - Cubase 7 is picky as funk. But, I know which compressor in my arsenal does what. So I'm fine.

606/808/909 style snares. Sounds counter intuitive but i often use it to give these type of snares real 'snap' - i then replace the lost high frequencies with eq(the counter intuitive part)...
