MODS, please read! Soundcloud has gone into retardmode. I can do whatever I want but I cant save the file as downloadable. I reuploaded the file, but still no use. I could try again tomorrow or I could send you the track via PM if that is of help. I don't know what to do solve this.

z.prime - We Can Overcome

Back to my roots a bit this month with a sorta progressive-trance-but-maybe-elctro-a-bit track.

https://soundcloud.com/z_prime/zprime-we-can-overcome

This month, I decided to use Live as my sequencer instead of Reaper. And since part of it was to learn the sequencer, I intended this to be a somewhat simple track. Not sure it ended up that way. :)

There are some very nice things about Live. But I can't quite use it as well as Reaper yet. Also, I decided to write up a detailed comparison of Reaper, Live, and Bitwig, which should be done after next month actually spending a fair amount of time writing a track with each noting the good, bad, and otherwise. Will let you all know when (and if I don't turn lazy) it's done.

Anyway, definitely most things were good with Live, except for one particular issue which must be somehow related to my system (new laptop - started with Windows 8, installed Windows 7 fresh but no luck solving it), which made it incredibly difficult to work with, which is very unfortunate because I quite like it for a sequencer.

Anyway, this track used:

Live 9 Standard 32-bit

polyIblit 58 instances

Live FX:
Compressor
Glue Compressor
EQ Eight
Reverb
Multiband Dynamics
Delay
Ping Pong Delay
Filter Delay
Auto Filter
Utility

Saturator

Other FX:

Limiter no6
TDR Slick EQ
TDR Proximity
VOS SlickHDR

Enjoy!

Wow, what a month! :)

First of all, I just wanted to congratulate all contestants: some really, really great stuff there. PolyIblit surprised me a lot: I couldn't imagine this synth could produce such a vast array of sounds. I've already listened to all tracks, but because of all the rush related to the collab, I still haven't got the time to comment on any of them... but it will happen. :P

I'd like to take the chance and thank H-man (Hokey) for the amazing experience of doing a collab track with him. Along with everything he's already mentioned, we also had to deal with the huge 12 hours time zone difference between Australia and Brazil. But everything worked much better than expected, and it's been really a blast.

So, I really encourage other contestants to give it a try and do a collab track with an OSC fella. After all the ruckus that happened lately here on OSC forum, a collab is the perfect way to see what OSC is really about: overcome the challenges that arise during one month, get out of your comfort zone, exchange ideas, learn and teach new stuff, make new friends and so on.

I've just sent H-man a message saying that, even though this is my 5th OSC, it's been the very first time that I'm really no concerned at all about ratings, bad comments or anything like that. Our journey and the final product was the real joy, at least for me: everything else from now on will be a huge bonus, no matter what happens in the end. A nice collab experience makes you grow up, both as a musician and a person. :tu:

BTW, if you're looking for a collab fella, look no further: H-man is the man!

^^^ Congratulations H-Man and Animehaus. I am sure you had a lot of fun doing this. I always wonder how it works as I haven't done it so far. I am bit reluctant to do collab also, because I think I will not be able to devote enough time to do it right. If I see the history of my last few OSC tracks, I always worked late night over the weekends. One track I laid down in couple of hours but then I lost interest and couldn't do anything until end of the month. I am not sure anyone will be ready tolerate this behavior :-D. It would be nice to hear your story though. Do you have the same DAW? I see two are listed and H-Man mentioned New DAW in his comments so assuming you didn't. So was it basically midi files that you guys kept working on. Another thing that I always wonder is the mixing. How did you manage that part?

I am a heavy Reaper user too. Looking forward to your comparison. I am more interested in Reaper Vs. Bitwig. I have a copy of BS but haven't had time to dig deeper. Plus it looks like they have to iron out some more bugs before it becomes a DAW of choice but the workflow is good. I have heard a lot about Live PDC issues, did you have to do any extra effort to work around that? I use Windows 8.1 but don't have Live otherwise I would have taken a look at your issues. Create a new thread, you never know.

This is my 2nd OSC, and I just have to add my voice to what has been said before. A great pile of tracks with variation and distinctive sounds. I still have to work my way through the last batch which trundled in just before the deadline, but looking forward to that. I try to comment on as many as possible, adding my own personal view on the music.

I find that listening to the various tracks certainly nurtures new musical ideas and some of this is bound to rub off into later tracks.

Looking forward to voting ... and the next one ... already got some orchestral stuff on the go, but how it will be implemented of course will depend on the nature of the next beast in the OSC!

Anyways, well done everyone, you all never cease to amaze me.

Rob

Time to vote:

All tracks are here

Note:
Since the new voting page has no way of making sure all tracks are scored and this led to multiple DQs last round, the previous voting page will be used for now.

RULES: (note new rules marked in yellow)
- Last day for voting is 15th May (KVR time).
- Voting is done by giving ALL submissions a score between 1-5 points (where 5 points is best). Max 1 point for your own entry.
- Once voting has ended, all votes will be published
- Collaborators need only vote once. In other words, they vote as if they are one person.
- Voters must have had 40 prior forum posts before competition start, or participated in that month's contest to be able to vote
- Voting is mandatory for participants (disqualification if not voted)
- In the case of equal scores after voting, submissions will be separated by how many 5pts they got, then 4pts and so on
- Prizes are given to the top 5 placings, winner gets first choice of a (single) prize and so on down. If the field is less than 20 entries, only 4 prizes will be available. If less than 15, 3 etc.

HOW TO VOTE:
- Vote by clicking in this form here:

Voting form

- To make sure voters are who they say they are, you must write a post in this thread saying you have voted. (writing the single word 'voted' is enough)

- If you have made an error when voting, do it again but add the word 'revote' or similar after your name.

Voting tools:
- A bookmarklet that adds soundcloud tracks to the OSC voting form in the appropriate locations so you can play the tracks while voting. (made by Z.prime)

Seems your track is not shared to the OSC SoundCloud group yet.

Your entry is accepted but the voting has already started so better hurry up as people might miss your track if it's not on the player.

Hi all,

Yep, this was a fun way to do OSC this month :) Based on our experience I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to "shake up their studio" and extend themselves a little. I like to think that I can push myself to keep learning all the time but this has been a huge leap forward.

You may not think so, but I personally found a month to be a very short time in which to realise our track. We started with two different hosts, a synth, and an email address

I will collect my thoughts and add some notes about our experience and )share our process with you all) in a day or so but I really just wanted, first and foremost, to thank Animehaus for being such a generally likable bloke  Very polite, interested, motivated and an eternally optimistic outlook.

And for anyone who's wondering, His English is a lot ...lot better than my Portuguese :hihi:

So I too am excited to start listening to all of your entries. :hyper: Bring it on.

In short, we did it all with email and an account on 4Shared (Online storage). I think we both found this to be quite workable.

As mentioned I'll put together some concise notes and add them here in a day or so. Stay tuned.
