Duh!!! Pilot error. Turns out in the install process you are asked what you want installed. I hastily unchecked everything except for VST 64-bit. Down at the bottom of the list is an entry for presets and manual. Like I said: duh!!!
ouch. that's a rather silly combined option in an installer, IMO.
