Actually there were a lot of reasons to ditch QuickTime. And, they are finally properly building a video platform. QuickTime is a piece of crap and needed to die. But, it is a case of go backwards to go forwards.

In the future you'll be able to render videos with audio. That's part of the reason why they're telling you to "watch this space".
jancivil seems to be a bit out of the loop but Quicktime for Windows was discontinued by Apple with various widely publicized vulnerabilities. Requiring Quicktime to be installed would put Steinberg's customers at a huge security risk.

The installer kept hanging at 100%.. all 1.4 GB downloaded.. then it would say download failed.
I just found the _part file it was making and removed the _part off the name.. and ran it. It installed without issue.
I then had to go to the elicenser.net website and download/install the latest software. After I did that then I could register my key and run Cubase Artist 9.5

Wasn't expecting this til Decemeber. Good show Steinberg. Really impressed. I'm suspecting a lot of these were due in 9 but having to write an entirely new video engine, slowed things down a bit.

So far it works fine.. I thought it was outputting a brighter mix until I A/B'd the same project from 9 and 9.5 and they were identical to my ears.
One thing I didn't like was the master volume slider was gone from the bottom bar.. but I found it again by double clicking on that section and it popped back to where it was before. I wish we could save UI settings from version to version but I guess that is difficult when the UI is changing.
I also noticed the color scheme is less blue and more a colder steel/grey. But that seems easy enough to change in the preferences.
update: actually did they remove some of the color preferences? hmm..

Very happy with this update. Lots of fantastic features, and so far very smooth on current projects. No crashes on Windows 10 and a joy to dig into automation for a change!
The media browser is a huge plus. I own Halion 6 so the HS3se was useless as an addon. Lots of new mixing/mastering presets and some good make overs round out those additions.
The extra slots were not a big deal for me, but adding a loudness meter to the zones was.
Good stuff...keep it coming Steinberg!

As for the Cubase upgrade it looks awesome, looks like Steinberg listened to their customers (going on what id seen requested on this website) only wish they gave us an option to not have a dongle. That's one of the main reasons I haven't bit the bait on Cubase despite being envious of some of it's features.
Can you defend my wallet instead of ableton?

In a round about way, sort of. But if you go to the custom color setup, it gets you where you need to go. It’s just a little goofy to get used to how it affects the general color. You also can flip the base hue once you’ve set a custom color. So technically there are MORE options, but some of the original pallet spots were removed when the default skin thing got added.VitaminD wrote:

For me, I have never got on with the Cubase default. I want light background with black grid lines on the editors. I don’t know how anyone sees anything with the light gray grid on gray background. All of those base default choices are just a different color of the same unreadable choice. But, I’ve always been able to adjust it to where I needed it. This is no different.

The color option in the new Cubase is the ONE thing I am turned off by. I agree about the readability. Terrible, but workable.
I think it is interesting to see cross conversations so much in these threads. I am guilty as well. Since I own Ableton, Cubase, Reason, and FL Studio (as well as Maschine 2), and I keep them up to date...yes it does get expensive. Trying to compare features is silly, and honestly, that is why I have the selection that I do.
FL Studio offering free updates is amazing. And I do not know how they do that, as well as typically being "cracked" and overall an inexpensive DAW. Well, I guess that is how they do it. But I never warmed up to the work flow. It is ok for some things, but still not my cup of tea. Maybe I don't understand it as well as I should.
On the other hand, Cubase is nearly perfect. The few left over things on my list are taken care of. And that was worth the cost of the trip to get here. Someone has to finance it! Ableton and Reason just fill in the gaps. I don't mind the workflows, though still not quite like Cubase.

What was the major upgrade price? I mean from version 8 Pro to 9?
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.
