I thought so too.

Well, there is no point arguing with people who want to rewrite the laws of copyright. You want music to now be about feel and mood and ambiance and whatever else that has nothing to do with actual "music" that's fine by me.
But you know what they say. Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. One day you're going to write something and somebody with way too much time on their hands is going to analyze your song to shit, find something about it in common with something else, contact the party involved and the lawsuit will follow and you'll be like "wtf?" until you hear the song in question and regardless of whether or not you ever heard, there it's gonna be, staring you right in the face. That riff, mood, synth texture or whatever and it sounds close enough to what you did and you're gonna get your ass sued.
Me? I'll be laughing my ass off on the sidelines saying "I told you so."
I feel sorry for anybody entering the music industry in this world that we've allowed to happen through nothing but greed.

I actually agree with the ruling.
I also definitely agree with the blurred lines ruling. Plus, never forget who sued who first on that one (cocky mf). If you don't get that one, then you haven't listened to enough Marvin Gaye (so please correct that).

Its just 12 notes after all.
Plus in pop music, people tend to follow the crowd (or else it wouldn't really be pop).
I have a very good feeling that if you listed to the testimony of the case, you might change your opinion. This isn't about ambience or mood.

No it's not. it's about bull shit. I have a degree in music and these two songs are different, PERIOD.elxsound wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2019 2:13 amIts bound to happen.wagtunes wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2019 2:09 am Well, there is no point arguing with people who want to rewrite the laws of copyright. If there is ANY justice, the verdict will be overturned unless Katy Perry just doesn't give a shit and decides it's not worth her time.

In 2016, just 3 years ago, it was determined that there was no plagiarism here by Stairway To Heaven. And this riff is a hell of a lot closer than the Katy Perry one.
We've reached the point where absurdity has become the new normal.

Katy Perry says she never heard the song.
She's lying. She thought she could get away with it... or perhaps a publicity stunt... but no way that vocal intro matches on top of the riff by coincidence. No way.
Sam Smith lost a case to Tom Petty claiming he had never heard of "I Won't Back Down"... people are liars. We live in a world of liars.
I don't know why she did it. She liked the "hook"... some black magik shit, I don't know...
But she knew about this song. It won the top Christian Music rap award... had 2 million views on YouTube, was nominated for a Grammy... in a genre she was familiar with... The jury got it right. I think music will survive. You can now go laugh your ass off in a corner.
I'm going to rip off Satisfaction, change one note and add some portamento... it's gonna be awesome.

So let's start the list of songs that sound the same that DIDN'T get sued.

First of all, you're calling somebody a liar without any proof to back it up. It's just YOUR opinion.
But it's irrelevant. Whether or not she heard the song doesn't matter. You'd have to live in a cave to be in the music business and NOT hear hit songs. What matters is not even intent. What matters is the finished product. And the finished product is a different song from the one doing the suing.
You can shout from the roofs "plagiarism" all day long until your hair turns gray. It won't turn a pig into a duck.
I hope to God this gets overturned, as it SHOULD, just so I can say to all of you "I told you so."
Totally bogus lawsuit.

I still believe it's a well thought out publicity stunt in favor of both artists. At the end of the day it's show business.

I have a degree in music too... for what it is worth. Probably many people here do. It's not a big deal really and certainly not a PERIOD on anything.wagtunes wrote: Mon Aug 05, 2019 2:16 am I have a degree in music and these two songs are different, PERIOD.
I am interested though in your examples though. Will listen.

Here's another one.
Shania ripped the chorus right off of ABBA's song. Talk about blatant.
Do I really need to go on because I can do this shit all night.
Based on the latest Katy Perry fiasco, we should have a good 1,000 more lawsuits than we have in this business.
