The context here is audio, producing, mixing, etc. So not so «easy».Mushy Mushy wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 3:28 pmIt's actually very easy. The majority of people only use their computer for browsing and email (hence why tablets took off in a major way). Just store it on the bookcase when you're not using it for that 1 hour per week.TheMaestro wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 3:17 pm Why people that doesn’t need to have a mobile computer uses laptops is quite the conundrum.

I used to use a dedicated music pc, now I use a laptop. For music. In term of pros/cons when I was considering last year whether to buy a laptop or a desktop, about the only pro for a desktop was having more usb ports, then I counted up and figured I never actually used all the desktop ones anyway and the 4 I now have on my laptop is still one more than I will need.TheMaestro wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 6:10 pmThe context here is audio, producing, mixing, etc. So not so «easy».Mushy Mushy wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 3:28 pmIt's actually very easy. Price...pretty even, even considering I needed an external monitor for the laptop.
Price/functionality ratio...pretty even
Potential power...yeah I can go higher on a desktop, but I just don't need it, so why pay for it?
Portability...obvious which wins that, and surprisingly (not) musos with laptops do actually use their laptops elsewhere.
Programmes/apps/OS...no difference. I seriously can't think of anything I need that I can't use on the laptop.
Connectivity...actually quite important in small ways. My studio is underneath the house...potentially troublesome wifi connection. If I need to connect for whatever, it makes more sense to me to take the laptop upstairs and do what I need directly rather than d/l everything to a drive and transfer. Sometimes that's just not workable.
Space...laptop wins everytime for me. I got sick of having a hulking tower taking up valuable work space.
Personally, I think it's pretty obvious why a laptop works for a musician. If you like desktops, fine...I did for decades. We all work in different ways. Yours is not the right way.

This is typical of the state of denial most Mac users live in. I've explained it twice but I will give it one more go, just in case you are just too stupid to understand. Apple appear to do well because they only compete in a the upper price bracket, so their scores aren't dragged down by cheap laptops made with cheap components. If they restricted their survey to laptops over $1000, I sincerely doubt Apple would do any better than Dell or HP or Lenovo or Razer or Asus or Acer or anyone else. If they used a more objective metric, say days in repair rather than simple customer satisfaction, I reckon Apple would actually look worse than PC manufacturers like Dell, who offer much better warranty service.Forgotten wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 12:55 pmBut they don't do they? The premise of the discussion was that Macs come out as more reliable in consumer surveys.BONES wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 11:22 am It's not about numbers, it's about price. Cheap computers use cheap components so a $400 Dell laptop is far more likely to fail than a $4000 Dell laptop. Apple don't sell $400 Macs so they don't get dragged down by cheap components. So what I was saying is that if you only look at laptops that are as expensive as a MacBook, then you would very likely find that Macs were no more reliable than other brands in that price range.
What really matters, though, is that no one brand is so much more reliable that it should influence your purchasing decisions. If it's a score out of 100 and every brand scores between 80 and 90, let's say, then it won't matter which you buy, the chances of having any problems are roughly the same. But if one brand scores 50 and everyone else is scoring 80-90, the that tells you there may be one brand to avoid.

Didn't you say here a while back that you're 62 years old? And you're still posting like a hormone controlled teen who has to be right about everything? Are you lonely and desperate for attention to the point that you lash out hoping it will get you some attention whether it's good or bad? There is something seriously lacking in your social skills (not to mention the fact that you have no shame in repeatedly defending points you make with ad hominems when your arguments lack any real substance).BONES wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 1:20 amThis is typical of the state of denial most Mac users live in. If your constant rudeness and desperation to get attention are a cry for help in some way, you should man up and be honest with people. You state many times that you don't come here to be popular, yet you say it a few too many times... Don't you think that in your 60s you should take the time to evaluate why you act the way you do?
Frankly, there's no one else here in your age range who has social skills as undeveloped as yours.
Oh, and the point you're trying to make behind the ad hominem is rather pointless, as failure rates are tested by brand, not by price point. You have no data to back up any argument you are making as it's not available (prove me wrong if you have some), so your tantrum and calling me "stupid" are just speculation on your part.

While i think a Music-Laptop is nice for Live usage it's convenient. At home I like something small, quiet and energy efficient too.
Something that the industry brought to us in form of a entertainment device, something for watching movies.
It's called a Home Theater PC.
Just cramp a strong CPU inside a ( for example ) Silverstone SST-ML05B Case and buy a
( hard to find ) Touchscreen like this

...and you are mobile too.
Possibly the only difficulty might be to fine tune the Fan's but this isn't a big issue when using a 65 Watt CPU.
Oh, and this is way cheaper and much easier to maintain than a Laptop.

No, that's just you looking in a mirror. I don't see the world through the lens of my own ego, so I don't have to be right, but facts are facts and they are not open to interpretation. Maybe you simply cannot recognise a fact when you see one?Forgotten wrote: Sat May 16, 2020 3:44 amDidn't you say here a while back that you're 62 years old? Really? Care to point one out? If I call you stupid, that's because you are coming across as such. It's not personal but, again, your tiny, fragile ego can't look beyond that to see the point. Honestly, it's pathetic. It's the way 5 year-olds behave, not grown men. You can call me an idiot 'til the cows come home and I couldn't care less because a) I know I'm not an idiot, and b) I don't care what you think. Why would I? But when you suggest my arguments lack substance, then we have an issue because I've laid it out three f**king times for you.(not to mention the fact that you have no shame in repeatedly defending points you make with ad hominems when your arguments lack any real substance).
And you know that how, exactly? Have we met? No, of course we haven't so you don't know the first f**king thing about me, just as all I know about you is the mindless garbage you post here. You have so little to contribute, so little going on in your life, that you can't even bother with a signature. Or is that because you don't have the courage of your convictions and are terrified that if you were to put some personal info where people can see it that you'd become a laughing stock?Frankly, there's no one else here in your age range who has social skills as undeveloped as yours.
OK, now I have to assume you are winding me up because you have just agreed with me, although you are probably too caught up with your reflection in your glossy MacBook screen to have noticed.Oh, and the point you're trying to make behind the ad hominem is rather pointless, as failure rates are tested by brand, not by price point.

So basically no argument other than mobility, which I pointed out. And space? Christ. You don’t need a “hulking tower”.kritikon wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 10:45 pmI used to use a dedicated music pc, now I use a laptop. For music.
