It's funny how a gui can lure in new customers.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Mon Apr 05, 2021 1:28 am I ended up buying Microtonic over the weekend. Always wanted it but never pulled the trigger before. The new skins convinced me it was time. I got to work modifying Dark0ne to a "NotSoDark0ne" and I'm super happy with the product. It truly sounds killer. I don't think I ever even demoed it in the past. Really shoulda bought this thing years ago.
Here's what NotSoDarkOne looks like...

I really like microtonic ( since 2005 ) but it hasn't had any synthesis updates whatsoever , except the morph slider in 2010 and some macro controls in the latest update ( which is not a synthesis update ) .

I don't think it's all that strange. Our eyes are how we interact with these tools. We should like how these tools look. And it makes sense that would be a factor.gentleclockdivider wrote: Mon Apr 05, 2021 11:01 am It's funny how a gui can lure in new customers.

Imagine you're looking to buy two otherwise identical houses that are being sold for the same price, and one is just in some ugly color or has something about the exterior design that you just hate, and the other house looks great to you. All other factors being the same, you'll buy the nicer looking one. They both do the same thing. Looks matter.
Wouldn't buy a guitar in an ugly color either.

Maybe I am in the minority , but I didn't have any problem at all with the original gui .
It's clear and well laid out .
Maybe it's time for a microtonic v4.0 with some real new features and an expanded synth. engine

I don't even know if I ever demoed any prior versions. Microtonic was always just some potential purchase that never became a priority. In hindsight, that was a boneheaded move on my part because it sounds awesome! I didn't really care for the sound and/or features of other drum machines I've tried like SPARK, Drum Computer, or Heartbeat, but Microtonic hits a sweet spot for me with drum synths.gentleclockdivider wrote: Mon Apr 05, 2021 3:18 pm Maybe I am in the minority , but I didn't have any problem at all with the original gui .

I'd fully support a Microtonic 4, but being that version 3 is so new to me, I'm still working my way around it. One thing I really liked from Drumatic that would fit in a hypothetical Microtonic 4 is the ability to load different types of noise, including noise samples. I'd like the ability see the entire pattern in a single view versus the per-channel [only] approach of the current version.

But now you're understanding where the long time users come from when it comes to new features , since it's release in 2004 microtonic has got exactly THREE new feaures (dsp wise )
- an added attack stage for oscillator ( first versin was just a decay stage ) (2005)
- a morph slider (2011)
- an edit all parameters at once (2011)
All the rest was just macro scripts , patternum etc...
In the end I got so frustrated that I re-created microtonic in reaktor with additional features ,
a partial oscillator for membrane stuff (like in tremor) , distortion curves etc , comb filtering etc..) , hell even magnus liked it .
It increases the sound potential with a huge amount ,if he could just implement these I would be a happy camper , but no ...bring in new users with a fancy gui

Hadn't discovered that screen yet. Thanks!
I get the desire for a big Microtonic update with new DSP and a bunch of new tricks. Especially if you've had it for a long time. But the skinning support is huge, and it's difficult enough just to maintain working plugins these days with all of Apple's shenanigans. This being new to me, I don't have quite the same viewpoint. But if I had it for a decade, I might feel similarly.

Yeah they need new synth DSP for sure. I wish they’d copy some of drumspillage’s synth models for v4.

I'd love to see soniccharge become more "active" again - been waiting a long time for phase plant 2...

I never looked at backbone until you mentioned it here. After watching some videos it does look interesting. Potentially complicated, but powerfulkev2525 wrote: Sat Apr 03, 2021 3:47 pmandrewbrewer wrote: Sat Apr 03, 2021 3:02 pm One thing I’ve started to notice is “synth” and/or flexible sampler VSTs being able to make better drum sounds than any drum machine I’ve heard. But you pay for it with CPU footprint, unless you just resample everything. I like resampling
For resampling have you looked at steinbergs backbone? Its still a bit expensive for my tastes. Unfortunately it doesn't include a sequencer.

Punch2 can do polyrhythmsGribs wrote: Fri Mar 26, 2021 11:39 pm Well for a drum machine to get my attention it has to allow a different number of steps per instrument. AFAIK, Spark 2 does not offer that (but own own a license and a SparkLE controller thing that is really pretty cool and compact).
Tremor was a favorite at one time.
I would say right now my nod goes to DrumComputer and Evolution, though when I mess with drums these days it is mostly in hardware. MicroTonic will always be fun.
