It's a winning formula.

I meander in to personal taste a lot. If I had to choose a pop song by McCartney or Ham,I choose one written by Ham. What happened was a real tragedy & who knows what else he might have written. Floyd,I have to say I agree. A lot to wade through before Dark Side, which I always considered a case of a band catching lightening in a bottle then sliding in to the excesses of Roger Waterszerocrossing wrote: Mon Mar 21, 2022 7:53 pmThere are few artists that you can’t say that about. I don’t even know what Ham did outside Badfinger, which wasn’t that prolific. Pink Floyd? A lot of garbage to wade though, and even the early stuff has a lot of indulgent meandering that should probably have hit the editing room floor. I was so excited for The Final Cut, after being floored by The Wall… and it sucked. So did Waters’ Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. Gilmore’s About Face was pretty good… but I’ve never even heard his other stuff. Pink Floyd, IMO, just got crappier and crappier as time went on. Same can be said for all the Beatles. It is the way.melomood wrote: Mon Mar 21, 2022 2:15 pm Yea Todd Rundgren was all over the place, but did manage some brilliant albums. As for McCartney. I get that he could craft a good pop tune (I also honestly think Pete Ham was better at it) but his solo stuff. You have to wade thru a lot for the occasional gem
In a somewhat related note, I had the idea that I had somewhere approaching 100 pop songs finished and ready to go. They sat in a box for decades… some had been done in bands, many never got any attention. I finally decided that I wanted to get them down in at least a demo quality. So I started going through the box…O’oh. I’d say that 2/3s of it was totally crappy. Embarrassing. I couldn’t get them in the recycling bin fast enough.
I wonder if I had achieved some degree of fame where people were constantly blowing smoke up my ass, would I ignore them if they said that stuff was great? I think a problem for any successful artist is that it’s easy to get to a point where you can no longer be subjective about your own work.
So, yeah, I made a joke about Floyd’s pretentiousness, but the truth is, a lot of their early and later stuff is super pretentious and/or indulgent. A lot of it, is genius. They can’t all be gems.

For me, Prince was a bit like Dylan...generally sounds better sung by other people. He came over mostly as style over substance (not that I didn't like his style). That Skinhead O'Connor song showed how powerful some of his stuff could be, but you know that if he'd have sung it, it would have been all whiney instead of possibly one of the most emotional pop songs ever sung. I remember vividly the first time I ever heard that at the time - it stopped me in my tracks, and I generally hate ballads etc.

I never said Dylan was whiney. However...
...did you see the last episode of series 3 What We Do In The Shadows? When Colin Robinson the emotional vampire dies and Nandor caves his head in when he pokes him? That's what Dylan sings like.
