You know something I don't? The only people I know who actually have careers in music in the States live in near poverty, age really poorly and end up looking like trolls by the time they're 40. They also aren't actually making their own music, but whoring as recording engineers for a bunch of gun toting wannabe gangsta rappers. I.e., they're getting pitifully little money from musicians who are willing to run up incredible credit card debt pursuing their own pointless and hopeless music careers.

**edit** Oh, and I know one guy making a living as a country song writer in Nashville instead of becoming the next Bruce Springstein, which is what he always really wanted to do. So, he's another whore.

But I'm not bitter

You too are exaggerating a bit. A few days back I watched on TV; a rap guy selling his own CDs on Venice Beach or something like that, and he said he sold 65 000 of his CDs a year (selling on the Beach). If you sold 65 000 in Cro, you would be No. 1 musitian in the county. How does that compare.

I wouldn't mind make living as a recording engineer, nor I would mind working as a songwriter. I wasn't saying I would make it as a performer in the first place ( although I have more talent than Eminems or Marylin Mansons of the world, for instance) I think that if you have talent, if you're willing to educate yourself, progress and not be narrow-minded, you have a chance to make it at least as a sound engineer.

Davor... you also have to be aware of the fact that YOUR taste in music is also very subjective just like everybody else's. It just happens that, even though we grew up in the same town, my taste in music is quite different. Now I shouldn't feel offended by your statement that the music I like is not making any sense? There are "universal rules" amongst musicians which make some band a "cult" band or a "quality band" and bands like Skinny Puppy or Front Line Assembly, for instance, are universally recognised as such. As for the english... I happen to like Rammstein, too, and they don't sing in english , but english is almost like a native language to me, always been since I was a child, so I don't have any problems listening to, or understanding english lyrics and since far more quality stuff comes from England or US, I just didn't bother listening to our native stuff and I don't like it at all. It's nowhere near the quality of foreign music... Yes, I'm also subjective like you, like she, like your neighbour... we're all subjective. Also, I happen to like all kinds of alternative music because I've been listening to pop/rock music my whole childhood, I just got fed up with it.

You should not use the idea of one's subjecive impressions of music or quasi music as an excuse for your narrow-mindednes. You say you're a musician? Allow me to doubt that. I would like to hear you music, if there is such thing at all.
You don't know who Tommy Emmanuel is, and the man played twice already in Zagreb, and he is, according to some people ,the best acoustic guitarist in the world. Believe me, that man can express things on one guitar that all your Skinny Puppies, and tone deaf Laibachs cannot with all their big amplifiers and computers. We grew up in the same city, but, frankly, you sound as if you grew up in a basement, and were no allowed to see the light-. It's no wonder that you cannot find a job , with that attitude, a narrow-mindednes.
I don't listen to one style of music, I listen to a lot of things, from rock, pop ,jazz, classical, electronica, ... I don't evaluate music according to style, but according to whether you have an interesting, good, inventive tune, or you don't. Simple as that. You should try that too.

I don't know him either.
And I'm a guitarist myself, even making my living with it - at least somewhat.

You should get to know him then

Lucky you.... I guess there are people here who play the guitar, but don't know who Chet Atkins, or George Benson are. Namely, those are just some of the people Tommy collaborated with...

I like Balkan music... Goran Bregovic may be a creep, but he made some good records with at least 2 Balkan orchestra's.

There's good music everywhere... listen to the birds, heck even noise can be beautiful... It's all in the ear of the beholder.

Oh, and I like some of Laibach's stuff too. Saw them live in 1987-ish, it was... er, entertaining.

Well, you know, as my main instrument is an electric guitar (and my interest as well), I'm just not all that familiar with acoustic guitar players.

Oh, I think I know who Tommy Emmanual is, Australian session muso TV personality. He joined Draggon(Aust) once. I guess he might make that good guitar backing track, maybe, I don't know.

It would be very nice if someone could provide a link to some of that "Croatian masterpieces" so people could actually hear what are we talking about and why I can't stand it. Tone-deaf and blind Iraqui street begger on a violin sounds better than most of the balkan crap.

So give us some examples, so we could have a nice portion of a good healthy lough :D . They will see that there's no actual difference between Belinda and Gibonni for instance. All cheesy sleazy cheese...

Only a talentless frustrated person could conclude something like that. I would yet like to hear your "masterpieces". The fact that you neither play an instrument, nor have any musical talent whatsoever is not Croatian national problem. You should get a life, man.
As regards Gibonni, here is a link so people can judge for themselves. If your entertain the notion that the only "good" musical style is hardcore, punk, techno, or heavy metal don't bother.....

Great Music is Glenn Gould playing J.S. Bach. Or Maybe Boulez conducting Webern. The jury of infallible musicologists is still out on this one, as they are very slow to make decisions, but it still looks good for old Anton!

Everything else is for nincompoops.

And sissies.

Ever heard the "Time of the Gypsies" soundtrack? I love that "Ederlezi" traditional (in the "non-bombastic" version).

Dunno if Bulgaria is considered part of the Balkans, but "Le mystère des voix Bulgares" is a great record too.

Balkan music has a very rich tradition, with Byzantine, Turkish, Eastern European and jewish influences - can't be bad...

In my country (Belgium), musical tradition is much poorer you know... And there isn't much left of it either. Wouldn't it be sad if there were only hamburgers and Britney records?
