Korg Minilogue

After a couple of hugely frustrating months I have decided to get rid of my Minilogue and my Roland JU-06. I was stupid to buy them, they are rubbish compared to my Ultranova. A couple of weeks ago I was practicing for our recent gig and I realised that using the Minilogue instead of the Ultranova was selling our music short so I'm done with it. It lacks the versatility I need and I think that is because they didn't want to put any more modern conveniences into it than they had to. High quality digital multi-effects would make a world of difference to it. Without that, it's just not good enough.

That's what effects pedals are for.
My Moog Sub37 doesn't have any multi effects and I wouldn't hold it against it.
Ultranova and Minilogue are two completely different beasts. Comparing the two is just strange. Be like comparing a Virus with a Moog. I don't think it makes it a bad synth, just not right with your style of music and type of performance.

Personally I would take the Minilogue over the Ultranova every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
For me it's a more inspiring, responsive and better sounding instrument.
But yeah, it doesn't have onboard FX. This isn't a problem for me (I have plenty of options for FX) but might be for someone else.
There is of course a lot of subjectivity when you get into things like workflow.

I likedthe Ultranova sound and possibilities but it lacks control. If novation gave it a better UI it would be great.

I just rebought the Minilogue today since my shop finally got 1 in stock and with the new OS it is much better and less buggy and noisy compared to when they came out.
It even sounds better now in my view with a strong output which was weak when i bought the first one.
I might have been unlucky and got one with bad output the first time since it was one of the first ones released and it smelled like cat piss and cow dung and i had to ventilate for 2 weeks while using it.
The new one doesn't smell like that so i am more happy with it now and it sounds good too
So this time it stays

Better say you don't care enough about analogue sound, that you prefer the convenience of digital synthesizers. It's just not the case of most of us, who prefer to get a depth of sound that's simply impossible to achieve with a Ultranova. Each tool has its own use.BONES wrote:After a couple of hugely frustrating months I have decided to get rid of my Minilogue and my Roland JU-06. If Korg releases a 6 or 8 polyphony version of this it will have my attention.

They had a chance to release the Maxilogue before Behringer releases the DM12, but they went with that Monologue instead.

Big companies tend to engage only in battles they can easily win. Behind closed doors, certain info can be passed around and they prolly have a general idea of that their competition is up to. I thought Minilogue got released a bit out of the blue, but maybe they knew DM12 was around the corner; they would not get as many preorders if both would have been available at the same time (IMO, of course).Mutant wrote: They had a chance to release the Maxilogue before Behringer releases the DM12, but they went with that Monologue instead.
On the other hand, releasing a fairly featured mono with both Minilogue and Monotribe DNA was a smart move. They needed one, and there's no other one quite like it. Pus it reminds ppl there's also a bigger version for not that many extra cash (and thus securing sales for Mini). Again, maybe a move ahead of their competitors (I've said this in another thread - B will prolly come up with their own model). I sense there's more "logue" related gear coming soon, as well as new Volca stuff (chiptune synth, come on already). Things are turning interesting

I doubt. Korg's as well as Behringer's release cycle from requirement to shipping of actual units is 1.5-2 yrs.Mutant wrote: Don't hold your breath.

Novation UltraNova is indeed hardly comparable to both Minilogue and Sub 37 but this is also due to the UltraNova having a much more complex synth engine (e.g. 3OSCs, dual multimode filters (with Drive), VA waveforms, PWM, 36 wavetables, additional digital single waveforms, Sync (VSync), Ringmod, Noise source, 6 envelopes with adjustable slopes, 3 LFOs, Unison, effects with up to 5 FX slots and several features more). Due to this it is more likely that you could get close to sounds of the Minilogue and Sub37 using an UltraNova than the other way around.NEOREV wrote:Multi effects?BONES wrote:After a couple of hugely frustrating months I have decided to get rid of my Minilogue and my Roland JU-06. FWIW currently when only using hardware this is my favorite setup:
- Korg DW-8000 (8 voice hybrid synth with real analog Korg filter chips)
- Novation UltraNova, triggered by a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S61 MIDI controller keyboard
- Novation Bass Station II, triggered by the UltraNova keyboard (UltraNova set to local off)
At the moment both sound and feature wise i could not fully replace any of those synths by softsynths.
Additionally also Waldorf Blofeld desktop (with SL expansion), Waldorf Pulse 2, Waldorf Streichfett and Korg Wavestation EX (bought at EBay around 2004) are availabe here and added when needed.
The DW-8000 (second hand at EBay), UltraNova and Bass Station II together did cost less than a Sub 37 when bought new. Even when adding the Komplete Kontrol S61 i am still under 1900 € for those 4 (while the S61 is also my main masterkeyboard for softsynths).
For Moog sounds i currently mostly use Synapse Audio The Legend (Monark was mostly replaced by this for me), U-He Diva and sometimes Arturia Modular V3. I had owned a Minimoog Model D (until 2005) and a Moog Slim Phatty (until last year) in the past.
Both the Bass Station II and Waldorf Pulse 2 include an analog multimode filter with LPF, BPF and HPF modes (BS II: 7 modes, Pulse 2: 4 modes) which is not included with any Moog synth except a Moog Modular.

Actually it had 8 Korg NJM2069 chips, one for each voice...david.beholder wrote:Please don't confuse people, DW-8000 had only one filter chip.Ingonator wrote: - Korg DW-8000 (8 voice hybrid synth with real analog Korg filter chips)
Did i mention that it included multiple DIFFERENT filter chips?
Korg Poly-800 only had one of those NJM2069 chips so it was more paraphonic than fully polyphonic.
Besides the VCF that chip also inlcuded a VCA.
