Is it definitely coming out this year? And even if it does, without the ROM files it's pretty much useless.cslevine wrote: Fri Jan 02, 2026 9:39 pm HAPPY NEW YEAR to SHEAF !

You do know it will load the factory ROM files right?
And you also know the AFM part doesn't need them right?
And most importantly and this may shock you but this will be an actual Synthesizer, and will come with a slightly different sample library than the original one. This will allow you to make new sounds never heard before
These things would seem to most people to make it very useful

But where am I getting the factory ROM files from? I don't own an SY77.IvyBirds wrote: Sat Jan 03, 2026 6:39 amYou do know it will load the factory ROM files right?

Legally, you'd have to own the hardware device in order to also be able to backup and use its ROM. But if you don't care about all that kerfuffle, you just need to get better at googling

Sadly, that is one area I am really bad at. When I got the JP8000 vst, one member here was kind enough to PM me with the link to download the files. Otherwise, I would have never been able to use it. In the case with the SY77, I don't even know what I'm looking for. I never owned one.EvilDragon wrote: Sat Jan 03, 2026 8:40 am Legally, you'd have to own the hardware device in order to also be able to backup and use its ROM. To continue on this topic, I do have an SY77. How do I get the ROM out of it? Under Bulk Dump I find Syn Setup but when I dump that (via SysEx Librarian) I get a file called untitled.syx of 98 bytes. Surely that cannot be it.

You would need to get the EPROM chip or chips out of the PCB (provided they are socketed, IIRC they are) and dump their contents with an EPROM reader etc.

Thanks EvilDragon! Oops that is well beyond my capabilities and I certainly do not want to open up my SY77. So Is SWAY useless for me? Do I need the EPROM to run it?

There are a number of knowledgeable people around here who know quite a lot about SWAY. I don't. Why is there this sudden appearance of the SY77 eprom business. Is it needed for certain aspects of SWAY? What can SWAY do without it? What supplemental things can it do with the EPROM? It would be nice to have a complete clarification. So please enlighten us.

What's got into some people on this thread?
Haven't you read it? Depending on other posters to act as AIs for you?
SWAY is NOT going to be "useless" for you!
Sheaf can not for legal coyright reasons enclose the ORIGINAL Yamaha ROM samples with SWAY.
He has been busy creating replacement samples which, if I've got the right impression of this developer's perfectionism, will be all but indistinguishable from the original samples. They will be the 'legal' ROM included with SWAY.
So, you will get a beautiful synthesizer that will sound as close to the Yama one as makes no difference. I suspect it will even sound better.
So, again, SWAY will NOT in any way be "useless". Anyone using that word again in this context ought to be blocked from this thread.

If you own the hardware you can legally use the SY77 factory ROM files that are easily found on the internetsoundman007 wrote: Sat Jan 03, 2026 11:04 am Thanks EvilDragon! There is no need to however to use SWAY. All that will do is give you the original factory sample library. Since samples are subject to copyright law the original samples can not be distributed with SWAY so the developer has made a library of samples that is very similar. These similar samples are included and will serve a similar function to original factory samples
Of course if you absolutely want the original sample library you can find and install the ROM but it most certainly isn't necessary to and SWAY is absolutely positively fully functional without it

Thanks IvyBirds for this very clear explanation. I never thought SWAY would require the SY77 ROM, it's just that all of a sudden this popped up in this thread and I began to doubt.IvyBirds wrote: Sat Jan 03, 2026 2:01 pmIf you own the hardware you can legally use the SY77 factory ROM files that are easily found on the internetsoundman007 wrote: Sat Jan 03, 2026 11:04 am Thanks EvilDragon!
