Or like Dolby Corp. vs. Thomas Dolby?
Everyone KNEW that Thomas Dolby had a RIGHT to use his own name, but that didn't stop the Dolby Corp, who got a heap of publicity, from filing suit, only to lose, costing Thomas Dolby a fortune in legal fees but generating several million dollars worth of publicity for Dolby Corp and it's fading technology...

I'd say Scott voiced a legitimate concern out of concern, as I originally raised the point myself many pages ago. But I agree that it's prolly not worth worrying about -- the publicity generated from suing a 'charitable enterprise' would no-doubt backfire, causing a heap of negative vibes (another form of backfire would be like when a zillion people wanted to buy our CD out of sympathy -- we being discovered as 'cause celebre' by the snobbery of upper-class Knight's Bridge -- which may not be a bad idea
).
For now, my sig doesn't change.
But I am mindful of these kinds of tricks and I will stay alert, so if you see it change pronto-like, you'll know why. I have fired off an email about this question to my lawyer, Joel Katz. He will have a 'free' opinion. Then he'll have a $$ opinion. We'll see what's what.
So, if we have reached an understandng to stay vigilant, I'd like to suggest we subdue any debate for now as "point taken", and I promise I'll front up asap with any news.
Cheers,
Alex The Merry Prankster

No, I actually don't think it's misleading. Chrysalis is not a household word anymore. Neither is your example Columbia--when you asked about it I honestly started thinkg about the space shuttle and/or the District of Columbia, not the record company even though I'm old enough to know Columbia as a major label. Now if it said Sony: Musicians For Katrina Relief . . . THEN I'd say it was misleading.rockstar_not wrote:...Don't you agree that it could be considered misleading to the non-KVR informed that may happen across the CD?
It also depends on the graphics. Something like:
CHRYSALIS
[INSERT COVER ART HERE]
Musicians For Katrina Relief
Would make it clear that Chrysalis is the title of the work, as apart from "Chrysalis Musicians" (as in musicians from the Chrysalis label).
I think contacting Chrysalis and asking about it would actually be more likely to hold things up.rockstar_not wrote:I just would like to avoid the potential confusion that may arise with the Chrysalis name. We wouldn't want to see the release of the CD get held up for some silly reason like that...
Anyway, what better publicity could we get than a law suit slapped on us and stopping us helping the relief effort. Man, that would be international news!
In fact, let's change the title to CHRYSALIS MUSICIANS for Katrina relief and remove all mention of KVR . . . that's a joke, of course.

Okay, but only after I reiterate (I've been accused of always wanting the last word...xander wrote:...I'd like to suggest we subdue any debate for now as "point taken"...

I think, if anything, we could put a *disclaimer* on the website, as many have in the past fo such things, i.e. "This charitable effort is not in any way affiliated with 'Chrysalis Records', etc.Hovmod wrote:You have a point, rockstar.
And I didn't quote the Gibson case to say people who can't see the difference are idiots.
Maybe it's a good idea to choose a name that can't be mistaken for something else.
However, the only place they can get it is at katrinareliefcd.com, right?
So put an explanation there, perhaps?
But let's not do that yet and not worry so much about this right now. Let's get back to reality and realize that we have as yet to make a real CD (though we are very close) and stick to doing what needs to be done NOW.
We are indeed making mighty progress, but at this point I am way more concerned in getting everything uploaded and mastered properly.
And for any who think using the 'Chrysalis' as a CD name is not going to fly or shouldn't or don't like it, offer some more name suggestions here -- nothing is cast in concrete yet!
Cheers,
Alex

There is always, in this global gestalt insanity called Planet Earth, the worm that attacks the healthy organism (organisation).
It's part of life, of chaos, of entropy, of the second law of thermo-dynamics.
I've done me zen on this thing....

I predict, as entropic chaos itself demands, we are due for another troll attack on this thread in approximately... umm...

OK, thanks for more confirmation that I'm just turning into an old fart.emdot_ambient wrote:No, I actually don't think it's misleading. Chrysalis is not a household word anymore. I haven't kept up on record labels for years upon years. I do remember when I was in 4th or 5th grade, when we would have 'record day' in music class, where we would bring in 45's - that I always liked the name "Chrysalis", just for how it sounded rolling off the tongue.

YEs!!! You are cool! No worries about 16bit! Check your mix!!! Read the instructions on the Updated Song List Posts!!! (where is that anyway Alex?)ttoz wrote:I'm in EXACTLY the same boat. And I can't find the unmastered one anywhere. I have a 16bit mastered track in wave file, that's it.kovacs wrote:Damn...I just realized I have a problem. My master track is in 16 bits and I have lost some of the loops used so I cannot recreate it.
Will this be okay...please say yes...

Hey now,mn wrote:"If you can find a better CD, buy it"kovacs wrote:Chrysler?
For those of you not familiar with this (non USA residents),
In the 1980's when Chrysler was on the brink of extinction, the chairman, Lee Iacocca (or Iacoconut as my uncle who worked for Chrysler called him), came out with a series of TV ads, where the tagline on the ad was:
If you can find a better car, buy it.
Now, Chrysler has resurrected Mr. Iacocca's appearance in advertisements, with none other than Snoop Dogg. It's very surreal, and I'm not making this up.
Tagline now is:
If the ride is more fly, you must buy.
Again, not making this up. Fo shizzle.
