I'm making some presets in .syx format but before I waste a bunch of time would like to see if they work. I also don't know where to put them. I might put them on my Google Drive if anyone's brave enough to try them. What is the procedure?

No need for a blind test. Osirus is free. Plus there are some commercial presets which when loaded onto my Virus C sound EXACTLY the same in Osirus while in Viper they sound different and need tuning to sound the same.

If you look at my history you will find I am a strong defender of Viper because I like that synth for what it is. And for the most part, presets load fine and sounds like 95% there, but some presets sound different.

I would say that Viper is perhaps even more versatile and can produce a vastly increased range of tones given the nature of different osc sources.

But really if you are into Viruses (A,B,C) alone then Osirus beat it because it's the same sound + free.

Viper is an emulation of the Virus Ti and has Hypersaw oscillators, plus it's much lighter on the CPU than Osirus. I was surprised how close it can sound to the hardware. Yes, the patch converter isn't perfect, and some presets require tiny adjustments, mostly the filter cutoff values.

I know very well what is Viper. I own it. I was specifically saying about Virus C patches.

I found this in an old backup CD and installed it last night. Here's KVR info:
https://www.kvraudio.com/product/klangf ... evelopment

So, it does import .syx files and there's what looks like Access Virus B bank in presets, but it sounds nothing like the Virus B. It does have an old school analog feel on some presets, but you can't even fiddle with knobs because it just stops. No crashes. Plays again when you take cursor off what you're trying to turn. Anyway, just an oldie I'd forgot. (I do remember the whole KVR drama surrounding it though.)

To be honest, Micro Q was never on my list. Even Nord Lead 3 was pretty low on the list.
Virus Series YES, JP8000/8080 YES Yamaha AN1X YES, among newer ones Korg KingKorg & Novation Summit (not as much as the others though). I guess it's a matter of taste.
Jp8000 and AN1-X don't use motorolla cpu's for executing code , which is what the project is all about .
Of course, I understand that.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if developers released Virus C emulator, but without telling that it's emulator and without classic Virus presets :D
It's just "a new Osirus plugin"...
I would like the interface and sound quality, but I'd call it a bit "retro". I didn't own hardware Virus so I wouldn't realize that sound parameters are identical. I would not be happy with CPU optimization in a "new" 2023 synth. Since I know it's Virus emulation I find CPU usage low, otherwise, I would find it high

I suppose the main strength of Virus, both hardware and emulator, is the availability of interesting, production ready presets.
I definitely feel like there’s a lot of nostalgia that drives things like this. I had a Virus C for years. I loved it, but going back to it feels like a step back in every way. I never had a Micro Q, but that feels like a step back as well. If you’ve spent any time with a modern plugin like Dune, Phase Plant, or even good ol’ Zebra, those hardware synths don’t seem like all that.

That synth was a joke, really. Currently the only plug-in which sounds 95% like a Virus, and is coded very efficiently, is Viper. On my Win 10 system running 4 instances uses about 2% CPU, which is similar to Sylenth1.

Together with one of the NI Forum members (Mercury) we made a complete NKS version for the Virus C EPROM using Osirus with banks A-H converted to NKS, tagged and with previews

The skin I'm using is this one

When I read the 1st post in this thread a couple years ago, I thought - really cool idea, but I bet nothing will come of it, and then kind of forgot about it, until last week.
Then I saw the post about Vavra, tried that, and after it worked, tried Osirus and that worked too.
Fantastic!

I am being really slow here. Where do I find the latest version of Osiris. I can find the skins folder on the Discord, but not the emulator. Any ideas?
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

not discord, but you can find the builds here:

100% in the case of Virus, although the amazing presets make it worth having.

Micro Q is a bit different. It's certainly a step down in terms of sounding like an analog but it has a character that's pretty unique. And it also has great presets.
