There's a pretty massive gap between the levels of Ibanez's. My two Prestige models are solid - they feel like bolt-on neck PRS's - whereas my RG420 feels pretty cheezy, despite being made in Japan. That said, my favorite Ibanez is my '92 RG550, the build quality is nearly on the Prestige level yet it's not so precious that I have to treat it with kid gloves. That guitar with a Dimarzio Norton in the bridge is the closest I've gotten to EVH's tone.
this is why I take pride in my skills as a craftsman, I have criteria that others may not. What I worry about is guitars that are made out of stacks of laminated wood (like plywood but not like masonite like Dan Electro). Two years ago I put EMGs in a Mephis guitar for my friend's kid and this was one such guitar.

I can tell by the litlle details and how it feels whether or not the model itself will be good for me or not, whether or not I can make it as fine as it need. I can set up a neck, I can do anything electronic to a guitar and I can mod things with ease.

I did do luthier work at one store (I did it on the side most of the time :hihi: ) and I can agree that osme 'ibby's' are pure garbage. The reason for this as you know Eric is that the work overseass is farmed out to the lowest bidder, Ibanez (Hoshino) takes more pride in the higher lines of guitars but the cheapy models might be made one year at the same factory as say that Mephis guitar, or a Crate guitar, Hondo, Kent, even Epiphone I believe (correct me if I'm wrong Eric)

That does not mean that guitars made overseas suck, but they can vary especially from year to year.

The bridge makes a big deal. For example, I downgraded my #1 strat from boutique Kinman pickups to cheap Fender noiseless pickups and simultaneously upgraded the bridge from the light stock Fender to a heavy steel aftermarket thing. The guitar because snappier and more resonant acoustically and this fully transmits through the pickups. The bridge upgrade is what made that guitar my #1.
do I have to say it again? I will anyhow, first I agree, second imho stop bar is pertty bad. As you know I love strings (that are not used with whammy bars) that are anchored to the body...however again most of that is feel, the 'high' strings between the bridge and stop bar just does not feel natural to me

Mike, I agree 100% on basses :tu:

Yep, I have one bass and I intend to replace the bridge and pickups on it at some point.

I'm certainly going to replace the bridge before the pickups if I can't do both at the same time.

when you do

http://www.guitarpartsdepot.com/

note they have a bass depot, guitar depot and drum depot on the same page...best prices, best service (most stuff shipped usps is here within two days, onec 1 day)

My door buzzer just rang, I sprinted down the stairs but it was a package from another site 'guitarheads' containing two more of these artec QDD2 pre-amps (I have three now)

both of these are going in my Baritone where the tone controls should be now that I wired it stereo. In normal mode only one will be used (normal meaning using one jack) in stereo mode (each pick-up having it's own jack) each pick-up will have it's own pre-amp.

Next the bari gets an EMG P-Bass pick-up and active bass electronics from EMG and it will have three outputs...but that wont be until this summer at least.

I wish I could get a Jcustom, but even if I had the money I'm not anywhere near good enough to justify that kind of cash on a guitar.

 and

I was all set to buy it. But then I thought to myself "self, you got your last prestige at a great price and you are paying basically top street for this" then myself answered with "yeah, it's allot of money" and then I said to myself "self, will I really use this expensive guitar" and self said nothing back. I bummed myself out.

Other negative thoughts coursing through us:

-what if I don't like it? Yes I can send it back but....ordering a guitar online to me IS a difficult concept.
-Am I going to just go crazy every time I want to use the single coils (I guess you'd say they are tapped?) I'm used to "stacked" single coils so I'm not used to any kind of hum. Of course my indo ibby has a single coil in the mid position and it's not bad.

fixed bridge, for cruch/clean for chords and stuff where whammy guitars just don't really cut it.....seems like a no brainer but maybe I'm just making excuses. Sigh.....I have all of the money saved basically for it..

The quality can vary even with guitars from the same factories. My RG420 is made in the same Japanese factory as my Prestige's but clearly less effort was put into that lower model. Also, ESP's Korean guitars are fantastic yet they're often made in the same factories as much lower-end brands.

btw, the stuff coming out of China is starting to get really good, especially compared to what I used to see four years ago. At some factories, I've been seeing fret jobs that remind me of what you'd get from a high-end repair shop.

I like string-through-body bridges, too, at least conceptually. Unfortunately, that TOM-to-string-ferrules look seems to be associated with metal guitars these days so I'm afraid to go down that path myself. We're working with a through-body bridge that looks like a hardtail version of a PRS trem, I think that ought to go pretty well.

Here's a badass guitar that will be one of the best of your collection and ought to have great resale:

I love the bridge and set-in pickup design of these ones:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Ibanez-RGA321-Prest ... 500wt_1156

Personally, I prefer the natural finish but it's hard to argue with the price of the blue one. Plus, the blue one has upgraded pickups.

This one's got to be a monster:

If only this were made in Japan instead of Indonesia:
