Here we can note, with some degree of awe, the power of The Teach!

My take? ...as if it even mattered :hihi:

1.) I'd rather see donations to charity than no prizes at all (since the prize goods are readily available to KVR), though this is probably logistically difficult. I doubt a 'no prizes contest' will stop disagreement and argument, but it may soften it a bit. I have no problem with this at all. :)

2.) A 4:00 submission limit may reduce the number of serious entrants, since it involves a lot more time/effort, but it may not  VERY interesting to see ;)

Anything over three minutes done even slightly well and I wanna get royalties :hihi:

3.) Postponing the vote:  Perhaps a way to let all of the songs get reviewed/scrutinized properly? People to cool down? Punishment for acting like a pack of spoiled, witless, bitchy poofters? :hihi:

4.) The wording of the rules: Still weird -- It says "SHOULD be", but says you get disqualified if you don't, which plainly means "MUST be"

Whoa -- life marches on to the beat of a broken treadmill... :hihi:

4 minutes to build a nice Moog-influenced track and no prizes to get in the way of artistic creativity!
Nice move Rob, but shame it had to come to it.

I think Yuskevich should be given special dispensation to withdraw his track and extend it if he wants to though - in the interest of fairness, you know? :)
The prizes have stood in the way of your creativity? Wow. Can't wait to see what you come up with now, then...
That's not what I meant and you know it. I'm referring to the recent debacles that have taken place, particularly recently in my first ever contest. I thought the sportsmanship had gone out of it somewhat and I'd just not like to see this competition going down the pan because of it. :)
Hovmod wrote:Really. Have the prizes ever made a difference to anyone but the winners? Is there jealousy? Wide spread cutting of artistic corners? Commercial prostitution? I think not. I liked the prizes. I hope they come back. It's fun to make songs, and it's fun to compete. I've made it to top ten twice, and the thought of one day maybe receiving some software in the mail is an extra kick in the butt to do a good job. For me, anyway.
Yup, I agree. If ever I wrote a tune good enough to win, I'd be proud of myself. But you can't not have seen the shennanigins of the past few days? I'm referring to that.
Hovmod wrote:4 minutes is appropriate with this theme, but I sure hope there will be fewer entries then. Because for one, it'll take twice the time to simply listen, but it will take more than that to listen properly to each song. A two minute song is a poem or short story. Your build-up, main idea, climax and ending all have to be consise and to the point, and you shouldn't add anything that doesn't need to be there. A 4 minute song can be a symphony, or, to stay with my metaphor, a novel. And deserves to be listened to as such. So it'll take more time to listen to everything this month.
4 minutes is a good time constraint for this particular theme I reckon. :)
I'm sure many of us could easily pan that out to 4 times that length at least to do the guy real justice.
Yeah, it's gonna take longer listening and yeah, the 2 minute ditties are self-encapsulating stories. But in this instance I think 4 minutes is OK.
Hovmod wrote:No voting? Hardly a contest, then...
hmmm... yeah good point - but hows about just doing a tribute to the great man for the love of it? Here a great opportunity has been presented to focus my mind on something I'd like to do but didn't.
Or you could look at it from the perspective that because some of the class don't know how to behave properly, the rest of the class don't get sweeties. :hihi:

Anyway, I didn't make that post to start a bloody war or summat - 'twas just a personal opinion. Excuse me for having one. :P

I didn't mean to snap at you or your opinion either, I just had an opinion, and your post seemed a good starting point for joining the debate. No bloody war intended. I'm a peaceful guy :)

I am reconciled with the theme for September (I bleeping suggested it, even...), I'm on it, trying to think of a good way to honour the man, and I'm looking forward to hearing what comes out of this.

Good luck and peace and good karma and all that to everyone.

Firstly I've a mashup of a few competition entries over at
http://www.audioshots.com/auditorium/vi ... php?t=2479
apologies to all concerned :D

Secondly Teach I totally understand taking away the prizes (though it really hurts-) But taking away the voting ie any competetive edge, is this permanent or as tribute to Mr Moog?

Is this a case where one or two *****ing ******* who can't hold their *****ing ***** and have to push their f******* ****** onto everyone else? ****** ********* ***** ****** *****

If so bummer. I mean how many people actually get embroiled in the arguments that have occurred and how many just join in to give their twopence worth.

I hate it when a minority can f**k things up for the rest. Whether its a collective enterprise, a commune a forum. Are they all so fragile as to be unable to withstand begrudgers.

Ps dont try and decode second paragraph. It doesn't actually say anything.(which is apt)

Just when I started liking this, I get the impression that it is changing into a "kindergarden". Voting results are changing, new contest rules are not the same as yesterday...
Maybe I´ll check the situation in a few days. See how things are and then feel if I want to go on... .. . 8)

I think the baby has been effectively thrown out with the bath water...

But I understand the dilemma pHz (or any moderator) is in and will stand by him whilst this thing gets recalibrated. Maybe instead of voting for songs this month, we should vote for best contest moderator and find a nice consolation prize for him. ...Like a haircut or something. :)

Alex,

There is a way to do this, even with prizes, as I demonstrated with my 'won by a hair' win in June. I contacted the developer of the prize that I won (SOUP), and asked if he minded if I sold my license and gave the money to charity. Alex at Progress Audio was very cool about it.

I made an auction of sorts over at the marketplace (which was a pain - I'll just do it on e-Bay next time) and Knockman was the lucky winner.

Knockman picked out which charity he wanted the money to go to, I e-mailed him all the license info, and the charity got the money Knockman paid for the prize. Alex got some good PR on KVR as a result as well.

So, there is a way to do this if the developers are willing.

If you really need a charity to donate to and can't decide, check my signature for a list(Bono haters don't look).

Anyway...

I think I'm on the record for hating long time limits, and still contend that the long-form winter contest last year produced more sloppier, less-enjoyable pieces than ever. And it makes voting fairly twice as long and difficult.

I'm also on the record of saying that prizes have been the root of all contest evil. ;)

I agree with duncanparsons: "Workshop" would be a good name for such a prizeless contest.

For xander, I just have to point out that devs typically don't have the cash to donate, but giving away a license is pretty much free for them. The only thing they're giving up is a potential sale. Then again, they're also gaining a potential sale if the winner likes their products! :) Nice thought, though: we donated (tsunami relief) in lieu of the January alt contest prize.

At any rate, it's pHz's call to make. If it's turned a bit "kindergarten", well, sometimes you just have to see how things *could* be before you recognize what you already had.

And if you want prizes, look for the Halloween alt contest next month. :hihi:

Rock on. Or, ummm, "bloop on", as the case may be this month.
