First of all, this is what the database is for. Second of all, you missed at least DUY Tape in your "holy grail shootout" as well as Ferox from Joeren Breebaart and the old Steinbert Magneto - amongst others (for example Nebula - yes people, don't scream, I didn't forget you).

Again, ferricTDS is NOT your standard tape emulation. Same goes for all other creations by Variety of Sound.

It is a gem indeed, but it's no 1:1 emulation either. It's a great tool that just captures the old flavour for sure. Then again, if you test EVERY available demo - do you even create musical content anymore?

That's your opinion. But personally I'd like to "know" what's behind a certain creation on top of the usual A/Bing. A thing I implemented into my testings after I ran into a certain firm I'd rather not talk about.

And "I" didn't take it to the heart, I only voiced my opinion regarding your post.

Just tried the demo out this morning and shelled out the £30 ($49) with no regrets. Who cares if it's an accurate tape emulation or not? It's great for creating a range of tonal effects as well as beefing up the mix.
$199 dollars is a joke though, so I'd get it while it's cheap folks. :D

Finally got it as well. And love it.
Nothing new since I tested it, but I think it is a great sounding, useful plugin. Money well spent, it already got use on different busses on the mix I'm completing. By the way, I think 199$ is a little too much as well.

In any case, thanks to Bernie T. for the support and chiming in. That is highly appreciated.

OT: I understand those who stick to SX3...Love C4, but I really miss the great stability and complete lack of crashes I experimented on SX3, and sincerely don't see ANY reason to upgrade to C5.

Another finding or two:
I tried MAGNETIC on an acoustic guitar track on an acoustic folk-rock tune I recorded. Lovely!! Sorry for the album references, but the guitar intro to Boston's "Hitch A Ride" and some of the acoustic intros on old Uriah Heep albums (Demons n' Wizards?) are my benchmark analog tape acoustic sounds. Sorry, I don't own any Jim Croce or John Denver CD's to compare to. MAGNETIC makes it possible to dial in that zing and percussive, yet sweet attack.

Though there are no presets in MAGNETIC specifically for electric guitar, the controls are not numerous and pretty straightforward. I put it on a distorted guitar riff that I'd recorded using three mics listening to two guitar cabs. What can I say? I was going for a huge chunky tone. All mics were dynamic and placed up close to the speakers. No audible phase issues when played back dry. With MAGNETIC on all three tracks, I did get a wierd phase issue. One of the tracks was fighting the other two. I have no idea what was happening, other than perhaps it messes with phase or introduces latency which could possibly throw three tracks of the same instrument out of time with each other. But I took MAGNETIC off the individual tracks, created a group track and routed all three guitar tracks to it (I would normally do this during mixing anyway) and put MAGNETIC on the group track. That worked fine. And MAGNETIC sounds great on a distorted guitar riff!! It sounds beefier, with more definition on the high end which will make it cut through the mix better. Makes me believe analog tape had a part in making the guitar tracks in past decades sound so chunky and yet clearly defined in the mix. The only limitation here is if I had wanted to adjust the tone controls in MAGNETIC differently on the three guitar tracks I used to record the riff. But by using one instance on a group track, I am minimizing the load on my CPU as opposed to using separate instances for each of three tracks.

The effect you recognize is due to the "saturation" you get while overdriving the channel of the tape. See it as soft clipping with the benefit of getting harmonics that tell your brain "there is something that wasn't there before".

This is the trick of tape recordings if you overdo it on purpose. And this is what most plugins try to recreate as well.

Still have to try it. If it's really as good, I might shell out the money. Else I still have a Grundig TK747 as 4-track outboard R2R and ferricTDS/Ferox/Magneto. Though I do like the idea of getting access to different, not to mention more consumer oriented "tapes".

So far I have tended to leave the saturation knob turned down. I should verify but I think turning that one up would add some distortion, which I don't really want. That's one reason I was less than satisfied with Magneto.
MAGNETICS has a separate Tape Color knob. That one works magic. It brings out the shimmer in cymbals, the zing in an acoustic guitar, and a nice presence on electric guitar tracks.

@reel speed: x64/reaper 3.73 the real speed mousewheel only allows left movement. Also (and this may be a feature) the speed is in sectioned increments and there seems to be no "fine" tuning.

I am 99% sure they ditched the ilok but I'm having trouble getting their site....I'm certain I saw that it's some kinda "one click" and done blurb

It's a key file obtained by a challenge/response process. You can make a backup of it and it will always work on the computer where you authorized the pluging, no matter if you reformat the hard drive. If you switch to another computer you need to authorize again.

Damn ! I'm sad that I can only use it at work...

It's truly the best warm/mojo/color plugin I've ever used, no joke.

Performs great with subtle sat settings, and using the onboard EQs. Glue the mix even better after proper master bus compression, opens things up, smooth out the highs, and fattens up the low-end.

Used it for mastering yesterday for a client, and I've been blown away. This makes me want to buy and UAD-2 Duo only for that, and maybe the EMT 250 and Massive Passive.

But I've the feeling that Softube, Waves or else will bring on a new "game changer" in the native plugins land sooner than later, in 2011... Or maybe IK too. We'll have to wait

.

That said, MAGNETIC is not bad. Pretty good for adding some nice sounding dirt to the sound, but it's nowhere near what the UAD Studer A800 has to offer. Far away from that !
